!Biography: Was born in Johnstown, Pa., Sept. 17, 1847, and was a son of Samuel and Sarah (Myers) Long; his mother has passed to her reward, but his father is still spared. Jan. 19, 1869, he united his fortunes for life with Lucinda Parrish, in Wilmore, Pa. She was born in this county April 23, 1847, of parents, John P. and Catherine (Kilpatrick) Parrish, both living. As the fruit of this marriage the following children were born: Maggie, Thomas A., Samuel J., Nealie, dec., William, dec., Katie, dec., Harvey, Anna and Mary. When the Stars and Stripes were hauled down at Sumter, he was among the volunteers to enlist September, 1861, at Wilmore, Pa., although but 15 years of age; he was enrolled as a private on Co. E, 54th Pa. V. I., 4th Brig., 1st Div., 24th A. C. He was honorably discharged August, 1862, at Harrisburg, Pa., and re-enlisted June 4, 1863, at Wilmore, Pa., in Co. E, 54th Pa. V. I. He took part in some of the most hotly contested battles of the war, Cedar Creek, Chapin's Farm, 2d Bull Run, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Richmond, Ft. Steedman and Appomattox C. H. He was honorably discharged from this enlistment at Harrisburg, Pa., in 1863; he re-enlisted Feb. 8, 1864, when 17 years of age as a private - was soon made Corp. - of Co. A, 55th Pa. V. I. In 1864 he was wounded at Drewry's Bluff, by explosion of shell in right leg/ he was taken prisoner same day and was held in Andersonville, seven months, Milan six weeks and Savannah two Weeks [sic]. In 1864 he was furloughed for thirty days and returned to duty at end of time. He was finally honorably discharged Aug. 30, 1865, at Harrisburg, Pa. His brother Benj., served in Co. A, 10th Pa. V. I. Comrade Long has been J. V. C. of Sergt. Thomas McClosky Post; he is a locomotive engineer and his address is Portage, Pa.
