This is in regards to a letter written by Matilda to Levi as per Mary W Hensel from a letter she has copied from Mary Stein. Our grandfather gave that old love-letter to Aunt Dilla. Mary Stein sent it to Mom, but wanted it returned, so this is my copy of it to keep with their picture. Mary Stein fixed the picture this way and sent them to mom. Now your Margaret can have them, being she has her great-great-grandmother's name "Margaret". (M.W.H.) Also included in this letter was a swatch of cloth with this notation. Our Grandmother bought this silk in Hessville - (called "Black Swamp", when she wrote to Levi), and made her own wedding dress, for Dec. 17 - 1857. Aunt Dilla and Aunt Em made this dress for Mom, after they had had dressed for themselves by adding plain blue. Mom said she always had "hand-me-downs". but her two oldest sisters were real "dress-makers" to make a dress like this! (M.W.H.)
Now to the love letter:
Fremont, Sandusky Co. Ohio July 6, 1856
Dear Levi
With great pleasure I will answer your kind and welcome letter this pleasant Sunday evening. Dear Friend, I should have wrote to you sooner but in week days I have no time and Sundays, I have plenty of places to go too. I was to Sabbath School twice today and to meetings once and we have Sabbath School here in our school house every Sunday afternoon at four oclock and we have a good school there for the house was full every time yet. Oh Dear Levi, I wish I could be with you in place of writing this letter for I have not forgotten that happy Sunday night that we spent together last and I hope that we may spend another such a happy time as we did sometime again together. Dear Levi, If that time will come that we may join hand in heart - I should not like to be parted from home so far as you and I are now, but still be content and suit yourself the best you can out there for a home in you like the country so much better out there the you do here.
Dear Friend, I am well and enjoy myself well and I hope that these few lines may find you well too till we may meet again. It is getting late, I must close for this time. I send my love to you dear Friend, Levi Wolf, I remain your sincere Friend.
(Grandmother's signature)
C. M. Lantz
(Copy of original letter - April 7, 1949 - M.W.H.)
On the backside of this letter is more but seems to be from Levi himself in these words:
I must write yet that we had onother burial here since you left. John Wards oldest boy died and they feched him here and the furenel surment was preached in the stone church by Mr. Smith.
Write soon if you please - good by
Remember me L W (Received by him on July 21, 1856)
