From "A History of Lipscomb County, Texas 1876-1976"
A.C. and Elsie Teter
In 1904, A.C. Teter left Sumner County, Kansas, for Woodward, Oklahoma,
where he was engaged in the grain business. Although he was born in West
Virginia in 1873, the family had come west in 1876, and A.C. grew to manhood
in Kansas.
An opportunity in the grain business opoened up for A.C. in Higgins, Texas,
so after taking Elsie Lee Benn as his bride, they moved to Texas. A.C. was
employed by the Crowell Brothers Grain Company in Higgins.
To supplement their income, A.C. ventured into the hog-raising business.
The Teters left Higgins about 1913 living for a brief time in Woodward,
Oklahoma, before they came back to Lipscomb County. This time A.C. and his
brother, W.A. (Bill) Teter, established the Sharon Grain Company Elevator at
the young, struggling town of Follett.
Besides serving the community as Follett's mayor for ten years, as
alderman, and as a school board member, A.C. served as a Lipscomb County
Commissioner.
The Teters had one daughter, Melba (Mrs. James Rowlands), and four sons,
Russell, Claybourne, Herschel, and Gaylord.
Two of the Teters'sons, Claybourne and Russell, taught many of the school
children of Lipscomb County.
Claybourne (Slim) taught at the Fairview, Lipscomb, Follett, Booker, and
Darrouzett Schools for a total of thirteen years. Russell taught in the
Higgins and Follett Schools.
