My Dear Bro. Sister and All Sunbury - Feb 12, 1919
As I was setting upstairs last Sun. the 9th, reading the Bible, the door bell rang, it startled me. John went to the door and a messenger handed him a telegram from you, stating that dear Robert had been killed in action.
Oh we all join in your grief and think it can't be possible that the cruel war would cut down one so good and so much needed. We think it must not be and hope it is not so and that he may yet return to you. There has been quite a number reported killed and afterwards, return. Minor just refuses to believe he is killed. He says, "Oh Mama, I believe he is yet alive and will come this way and stop to see us". How we all just dearly loved him. We all enjoyed his and Jim's visit with us so much and they seemed to enjoy being with us and said, "Aunt Dill, if we ever can we will come again". Robert said he thought this was such a nice town.
Is Jim in Tex. yet? Mary writes to him but he hasn't answered her last letter. Cal and Sis, bear up as best you can, you are not alone in this troublesome world. It seems everybody is under a shadow or gloom. We too have our troubles. Poor Mary was married last Sep, and was only married seven weeks from the day she was married until her husband was buried. The first night the report came that Germany had surrendered the 14, She thinks, he, Charles M. Howell, arose from his bed fifteen min. after twelve o'clock and went to the fool demonstration, and having an early date with a dentist at Northumberland, went over there and dident return. We dident think anything of it as his mother lives there and thinking he had his teeth extracted and went home to lie down, but when he dident return Sun, eve the 13th of Oct. sent out a searching party and his bro. found him at the foot of the store cellar steps with his neck broken. He having a knee that would dislocate, we think it came out and threw him down and resulted in death. We all feel so sad and sorry for Mary.
(If there were more to this letter, I haven't found it. The reason I believe this person wrote the letter was the Bro. Sister and All, John J. and Minor (son) which would be the Steins.) (The phrase by Robert "Aunt Dill" would indicate Cordelia or "Dilla" wrote this letter)
