Death: [Mock, 1995]
Alexander moved to Franklin Co., PA in 1751 with his parents. (Ankrum's
supposition that he and his brother were born there is incorrect.) He
served in the Pennsylvania Militia during the Revolution War, and moved
to Woodbury Twp., Bedford County, PA in 1803. There he changed his
name to Mock [Mock, 1995]. He was a weaver and dyer by trade, and a
well known writer of his time.
The 1799 tax list for Franklin Co., PA includes Alexander Mack Sr. and
Jacob Mack Sr. (his brother), Jacob Mack Jr. (actually son of Alexander --
an early usage of Jr. meaning the younger), Alexander Mack Jr. (really Jr.)
and John Mack (all three brothers), and William Mack, (younger cousin of
Alexander, Sr.) [Mock, 1995b].
The 1800 Franklin County, PA census index lists Alexander Mock, Jacob
Mock, William Mock and Gudlip Mock. John wasn't listed, so perhaps he
had already gone to Bedford before the rest of the family moved around
1803/04. An examination of the Bedford census might shed some light
on this.
On 26 Apr 1802, Alexander sold to Conrad Nicodemus, both of Washington
Co., land which had been patented to Mack on 10 May 1879 (sic, 1779 or
1789, probably) [Ankrum, 1943; citing Patent Book No. 16, page 65]. Then,
in 1804, Alexander, by then of Bedford Co., sold more of that tract to
Nicodemus. That second parcel of land contained 258 acres and 124
poles, and was bounded by the land of Daniel Price, John Wallace, and
John Moorhead [Ankrum, 1943; no source citation]. These two records
establish that Alexander moved to Bedford Co. between 10 May 1789 and
sometime in 1804.
Alexander died in his son Jacob's home, his will was signed 8 Nov and
probated 2 Dec 1811 [Ankrum, 1943; citing Bedford Co., PA Will Book,
1:305]. His six children, all born near Waynesboro, Washington Twp.,
Cumberland (later Franklin) County, PA., were named in order in his will,
together with the names of his sons-in-law. His three sons, all of
Woodbury Township, Bedford Co., were named executors. Witnesses were
Jacob Snowberger, Daniel Camerer and Daniel Kensinger.
