He has been gone four weeks now, he wants to come home on a furlow and they only give them from saturday noon until sunday night at 10, so he won't have time to come home. He wants us to come there, he said he would be sent to France in Sep. We are planing on going to see him next week. We will go in the "Gint". Do wish you could be here to go along. We will take Margarite with us. We shall stop at Lewis on our way home. We will go over to Kit Karson and go on the "Golden Belt" highway. Howard Davison said that would take us almost due there.
This is after supper, we had for roasting ears, sliced cucumbers, spuds all of our own raising our corn and feed is simply fine. We are having watermelons to eat now while they are sweet, they are not very large.
Jim came out to the good on his wheat. He had the best wheat around there. He received for his share $2121.00. He was sure a happy kid. He came here and stayed a week before enlisting. He went the 15 to July. He would of had to go the 22, by going the 15, he got this special. Papa went to Kans. and seen to his thrashing and settled up his affairs.
This is saturday after dinner, Thursday, there were 8 train loads of soldiers went through Eads, Friday 2 train loads. I do hope they will soon get enough men over there, clean up on them Huns so you can come home. We see by paper, Laffayette Troughtman was severely wounded. I think he was in Rainbow division. They say Buck Leslile was wounded too.
I received your Insurance Certificate. Got it the morning Jim went away. Was the 14 of July.
Mrs. Porter Ray wrote to me for your address, they want it so they can put star for you in service flag in Christian Church. Papa said I should tell you to write often. Now Robert, if there is any thing that you want, you get a permit and we will send it to you, if you need money we will send it to you. Jim hasn't drawn any money yet he sends every week for some. Hope you got our other letters. Will send you a bunch of papers. From your Loving Mother

MRS. C. A. BENNER DIES IN WEST
Fremont News Paper
Former Fremont Woman Passed Away At Home In Eads, Colorado
Fremont relatives were informed Tuesday of the death of Mrs. Margaret E. Benner, 67, wife of Calvin A. Benner of Eads, Colo., and the twin sister of M. J. Wolfe of Helena, which occurred in the family home at Eads Monday at 4:30 p.m..
A sister, Mrs. William Hensel, of Sandusky township and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Charles H. Waitman, of Fremont, left Tuesday afternoon for Eads to attend the funeral services which will be held there Friday afternoon. Burial also will be in the Eads cemetery. A daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Levi and Matilda Wolfe, pioneer residents of Sandusky township. Both Mrs. Benner and her husband formerly lived here. Her marriage to Mr. Benner, the a widely know Fremont blacksmith, took place here in June, 1890 but 11 years later the family moved to Lewis, Kan., where Mr. Benner began the occupation of a farmer. Some years later he "homesteaded" government land near Eads, where the family has since resided.
Mrs. Benner's death followed an illness of several months. Removed to a hospital in Denver, Colo. for observation, she was returned to her home a month ago and her condition steadily became worse. She leaves the husband, two children, William and Mrs. Gayetta Foxworthy, both also of Eads: three brothers, C.E. Wolfe, Fremont: M.J. Wolfe, Helena, and Robert Wolfe, Lewis, Kan., and three sisters, Mrs. Hensel and Mrs. Ella Sweinhart, here, together with Mrs Thompson Fox , also of Lewis. A son, Robert Benner, who was killed in action in France during the World War is buried in Oakwood cemetery, here following the removal of his body from overseas and a military re-burial in Fremont some years ago. Another son, James Benner, also a war veteran was killed in an automobile accident in Colorado.
Known to relatives and many friends here as "Sis" Wolfe. Mrs. Benner was born Nov 11, 1867. She received her education in the township schools and moved to Fremont after her marriage until 1901 when the family left for the west. Both Mr. and Mrs. Benner recently returned to Fremont to visit relatives, the most of whom still live here but she had not been back here in the last 10 or 12 years since the body of the son, Robert was returned here from France for burial.

This letter from Lewis, Kansas date February 10, 1919
Dear Aunt Sis (nickname for Margaret Wolfe Benner)
We were sorry as well as shocked to hear of Roberts death. And are sending our sympathy.
Last night at the Christian church a memorial was held in his honor. The church was decorated with flags and at the beginning a few songs of a patriotic nature were sung followed by prayer after which "Taps" were blown. The discharged soldiers then marched in carrying "Old Glory". The other churches all dismissed and it seemed that everyone was there. After the address was delivered a gold star was added to the service flag. This makes the third star. I did not know the other boys as well as I did Robert and i can hardly believe such a thing has happened.
We have been nearly sick with colds the last few days but are better now.
Hoping this finds you folks all well, I remain, As Ever, Gordon White

This letter from 6603 Drixel one, Chicago - dated August 14, 1921
Dear Folks
Received your letter this morning at 4 o'clock, too late for one to go in time for the funeral. I would have gone to pay love and respect for our dear soldier boy, who so bravely fought and died in this world war in obedience to the call of his country and to honor our flag. May his soul rest in peace, Is our prayer to day as He is laid to rest in the grave. At the time of the service I will be at the cemetery at My Darling Husbands grave. Each day I miss his smiling face and dear presence more and more. It seems He must come in at meal time, I find myself looking out of the window to see if he is coming.
Am glad to hear you are all well. Would have liked to see you if I had received the notice in time. I am expecting to go east to visit my daughter but if Sara and Luella can come for their vacation, I will not go till after the first of September, then would like for you to stop on your way home. Let one know if you can so I can make my plans. Regards to all.
From Nellie L. Benner (Frank Monroe Benner's wife)
