Obituary for William Calvin Benner
William "Bill" Calvin Benner, son of Calvin Aaron and Margaret Elizabeth (Wolfe) Benner, was born in Lewis, Ks., August 29, 1905. Bill passed away at the McKee Medical Center in Loveland, Co., May 11, 1980 following a heart attack at the age of 74 years.
At the age of 6, Bill moved with his parents to Kiowa County in a covered wagon to a homestead 2 miles northeast of Eads. He attended Eads School graduating with the class of 1926. He was united in marriage to Velda Marie Downs, July 4, 1934 at the First Christian Church of Eads. To this union were born two children. William Lee and Patricia Louise.
While attending high school, Bill drove the school bus for area students. At the time of his marriage, he was employed by J. D. Infield Grain Elevator & Company, was manager of the Eads Theatre and during this time also served as Undersheriff of Kiowa County for 6 years. Bill later was City Engineer for the town of Eads. In 1950 he was employed by the Colorado Interstate Gas Company and worked with the company until the time of his retirement in 1970 at which time he was presented his 20 year service pin. At the time of his death, he was serving as a Star Route mail carrier.
Bill aways worked for the best interest of his community having been a member of the Eads school board for a number of years. His lodge work was a very important part of his life. he was a member of the Unity Lodge #142 A.F. & A.M. serving as Worshipful Master in 1940 and secretary of the Lodge for 38 years which he still held. He was a member of the Southern Colorado Consistory 32nd. degree, York Rite of Lamar, and Bright Star Chapter #106, Eads. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Eads.
Bill was a true and loving husband and father, always thinking of his family first.
Survivors include his wife, Velda of the family home. His children; Mr. and Mrs. William Benner of LaSalle, Colo. and Mr. and Mrs. William (Pat) Barber of Loveland, Colo. Five grandchildren; Melanie Lea Haskell, Wiley; William Bart Benner, Amarillo, Texas; Tricia Jo, Gregory David, and John Patrick Barber all of Loveland. Three step-grandchildren; Rick, Vicki and Holly Osborn. Two great-grandchildren; Shae Lea and Matthew Ray Haskell. One sister, Mrs. Albert (Gayetta) Foxworthy, together with numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, James and Robert. Services were held at the First Christian Church of Eads, Friday, May 16, 1980 at 2:00 p.m. with interment at Eads Cemetery.
