Andy Head 002

Mid-Coast Marine of Coos Bay, Oregon recently delivered the Andy Head, a 65-foot, twin-screw tug to Alaska Timber Corporation. The vessel will perform a variety of towing and ship handing jobs for the timber company plant in Klawock, Alaska. Andy Head has an overall length of 65 feet, with a beam of 23 feet, 10 inches and a nine-foot draft.The tug is powered by two Cummins KT2300M V-12 diesel engines, through Twin Disc MG530; 6:1 reverse reduction gears turning 68 –inch diameter, four-blade Coolidge propellers in Mid-Coast Marine nozzles.       Keel cooling is provided using Fernstrum grid-coolers for the main engines.       Engine and steering controls are provided at three locations. Full follow-up hydraulic steering is used in association with a Sperry MK8 autopilot system. Mathers air-operated engine controls are provided at the same locations-located port and starboard in the pilothouse and at the aft tow winch station.       Electrical power for the various engine room pump and heading system is provided by two 30kw Lima generators driven at 1,200 rpm by Detroit Diesel 3-71 engines. A 12-volt battery starting system is used for the auxiliaries along with emergency lighting and radio power. A Microphor Model M-30 Digester marine sanitation system is used to meet USCG regulations for effluent discharge.      The tug was designed by Jack Wilsky to meet ABS and USCG standards for structural strength and stability standards.The entire vessel is protected by extruded rubber “D” section fenders, plus extra protection on the bow to assist in the ship-docking process. Fuel capacity of the vessel is 12,400 gallons with tanks for 3,000 gallons of fresh water.  Free running speed is in excess of 11 knots. Bollard pull of the vessel is 50,000 pounds. The Andy Head is named after the grandson of Edward Head, president and founder of Alaska Timber Corporation.
