The Nelson Log Bronc Corp., Coos Bay, Ore., has delivered a new 40-foot log and barge-towing tug E.W. Brogen to Ketchikan Spruce Mill. The tug, names in honor of Ed Brogen, a well-known Alaska lumberman and a 30-year employee of Ketchikan Spruce Mills, is presently a wholly owned subsidiary of Ketchikan Pulp Co.
According to Frank Roppel, the mill’s manager, the tug will be placed in service towing log rafts from local storages to the sawmill and handling chip barges between the sawmill and the pulp mill.
Jack Wilskey, president and general manager of Nelson Log Bronc, said the vessel incorporates several features not usually found in tugboats of this size. It has an unusually wide beam of 16-feet to provide stability for the 400 hp Caterpillar (D-343) Diesel engine with 4.5:1 reverse reduction gear.
Other features include a heavy duty 40 hp hydraulic powered towing winch with complete throttle and steering controls located at the tow winch, with a Wagner hydraulic steering system with station jog controls which give a 3.5 second H/O to H/O steering.
The vessel has been designed to accept either a conventional rudder steering system or a steering type nozzle, which will increase the total bollard pull of the vessel by 20 to 25 percent.
