Harper 2.0 - Wow!
Even the most diehard Harper hater
will be converted by this episode. I did not like Harper when the
series began. It thought he was a juvenile, whining, pain in the
neck. As the series progress, I began to warm to him, and after this
episode, I'm a fan.
The title of this episode could be, "Be
Careful What you Wish For." Seamus has always wanted to download
megabytes of data into his brain; he once asked Rommie to offload
her brain into his. In this episode, he very nearly gets his wish. A
Percian Librarian (not sure of the spelling of Percian) downloads
his brain into Harper's. Harper's body literally cannot keep pace
with the ideas and inspirations this information provides. It would
seem like his dream come true - except that it's a nightmare.
Among the information is the truth of what happened on
Brandenborg Tor - the scene of a massacre perpetrated by the Magog.
Directing the Magog is a previously unidentified and terrifyingly
powerful lifeform, who will stop at nothing to keep the truth
hidden. This life form dispatches a "Bounty Hunter" a fearsomely
huge muscle bound type with no sense of humor, reminiscent of the
Terminator but less lovable. (LOL) He is after Harper, and he
intends to strip his brain of the information, even if that means
stripping his brain from his body. Harper displays a great deal of
courage.
There is some comic relief in the episode: as
Harper's frenetic energy drives him to start one project after the
other, including rebuilding the X1, Dylan asks, "What is the status
of the other projects?" Beka interjects: "Harper, that's Dylan's
polite way of asking what the hell is this mess?"
I love Beka
more and more, some latent feelings for Beka emerge from Harper:
"Have I told you you're beautiful?" Beka: "Don't start with my,
Seamus."
Tyr leaps to Harper's defense against the behemoth
bounty hunter pursuing Harper, and stunned to find someone who
battles in his own weight class. When he gets a re-match, he's ready
for him.
Rev Bem gets a chance to reveal some of the inner
pain he suppresses, and we get some hints about Trance, as Harper
becomes adept at languages and speaks to her in her own vernacular.
All in all, a very satisfying episode.

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
Well, I never had any problem with
Harper. He's the comic relief (although Tyr might be in competition
for the title--"What's a
garage?" )
and I love the lines he's had. And this episode totally rocked!
(although Helix for me is still the best--but I think this will be
my second, at least until we see something about the "purple one").
I loved the references made to "Wizard of Oz" and then when Harper
was strapped to the table the first time (I think it was) he rambled
something that included "purple people eater"! I was ROTFLMAO! I
also liked the later scene between him and Bem, before he goes off
in the Eureka Mauru(sp?) Oh, in the slipstream place--loved the
line about "tail-gaiting"
Overall, one of my favorite eps.

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
Thanks
LC for another
great review! I LOVED this episode. In fact I'm becoming a real fan
of the show and of Harper. (Don't tell
EZ, ha!) I
didn't like Harper at first either. I thought he was a whinny nerd
bordering on jerk. But I admit, that has certainly changed after
this episode.
But the best part was again, the way they all
came to the aide of a team mate. I loved the way Dylan ran around
the corner firing away and Tyr rushing in to protect his team mate.
That's important to me to have they care about each other even if
they have strong and differing opinions.
And I'm with Melee, the
comedy was great!

So, you agree with me?
Hey there
Murdock, does
that mean you agree with me or that you still feel that way?

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
WQ - I'm a TYR, Trance, Beka person,
Rev Bem, Dylan and Rommie too. But I like Harper now. They really
need a Mister Fix It aboard, and he fills the bill. Love his
ingenuity.
Red, The team work is wonderful now. Dylan: Tyr,
Level 5 now!"
And off goes Tyr to perform his function of
Head of Security. Tyr seems to be warming to Harper. His comment
"He's committing suicide," he looked sad as he said it. And he
didn't protest or question their going after Harper to save him. I
think in the early episodes he might have said something like, "Why
should we risk our lives for an inferior being?" He went from that
attitude towards Harper to calling him "Boy" to calling him the
"Little Professor" which kind of acknowledges his intelligence and
ability. He still calls him "boy" when Harper irritates him.
Every episode is better than the one before, almost. Double
Helix and Distant Drum are still my favorites.

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
LC, I totally agree, the episodes just
keep getting better and I think that's mainly due to character
development. They've been highlighting one or two characters a week
it seems like and showing us what makes them tic.
Like the
Rev Bem flashback, awesome in that it was so intense but it left a
question for me, is that alien controling all of his people and
that's why they are the way they are, or just that select
group?
Hopefully they'll focus on Trance next because I'm not
really into her character, seems like a waste of space to me. And I
don't mean that to sound as mean as it does, that character just
needs better defined.

Hi Red! From day one I thought Dylan
and Harper were the greatest. I used my smiley because I was glad
that Harper 2.0 changed your feelings a little bit. Have a good
day!

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
I have to say I'm "Entranced by
Trance", and I love that handle that is used on the SlipstreamBBS,
though I am not the person that uses it or made it up.
Trance is very Zen. She represents the idea that conative
knowledge is superior to empirical knowledge. Tyr is an empiricist,
that's why the confrontations between them are so funny. I'll tell
you one thing, I was a philosophy major, and the writers of this
show (at least one or two of them were too, or were major devotees)
they make references to all many of the great philosophical schools,
starting obviously with Nietzsche (ugh, shudder).
No
existentialists, although Dylan does exhibit a certain amount of
existential angst. Too funny, they really take swipes at lots of
things. For example, Rev the pacifist Wayist who comes from a race
of beings that eat other species and force them to reproduce. I
loved the look on Dylan's face the first time Rev Bem told Dylan
that he, Rev, couldn't shoot at or kill someone.
I don't
think I taped the episode where Rev is really into his Wayist
meditation and Tyr makes some really hilarious wisecrack, I wish I
could remember it verbatim. Tyr wisecrack prompts Rev's remark:
"It's not wise to taunt a Magog who has a headache."
They
need to tone down the Magogs and soften Tyr's Nietzscheist
tendencies. I think that's why they have Harper - the Surfer
Dude.
And Trance, Trance never spouts theory or preaches to
anyone (refreshing). Trance simply does what she thinks is right.
I love Beka too, she another one who doesn't preach, or
waste time philosophizing, she's very practical. Dylan - you need
money to run this ship, or there'll be no Commonwealth!!!!!

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
I guess I haven't grasp the need for
Trance yet. In fact, her and Beka don't seem to really have a well
defined purpose on that show and I wonder which one will fade out
with time. Now, this is just pure speculation on my part okay?

Re: Harper 2.0 - Wow!
I think Beka has a very well defined
role on the show - she is pragmatic, but fundamentally a very good
person. She loves the idea of the Commonwealth, but Dylan needs her
to bring him down to earth once in a while. She did gently remind
him at one point that "God knows you're not paying me." Without
money, how are they going to sustain that ship? They really have to
address this issue soon. I thought Beka's idea of mining platinum
was entirely reasonable. Dylans is going to have to face
facts.
Beka and Trance are close friends. Trance has already
demonstrated a purpose - finding the penal colony where Dylan and
Rommie were held prisoner so that they could be rescued. Proving
that intuition is more powerful than logic (to Tyr's amazement).
She is also the nurturer of the group. She takes care of
Harper, who is also very fond of her.

Well put Corinth, I'm impressed. All
I can add is that Beka is like the Han Solo of Andromeda.

"The Hans Solo of the Andromeda," I
love taht, Murdock, and it fits very well, except that Beka is more
nurturing toward Harper.
