Lesbian Fiction
All this talk about good movies started me thinking about good
books, too. I'd love to hear some recommendations of good lesbian
fiction from a variety of genres. I live in a pretty straight
community (though there's a healthy dyke population, too) and it's
hard to find fiction or to even know what titles and/or authors to
look for. One book I love is "Gossamer Axe" by Gael Baudino. It's
sort of a modern day fantasy set in Denver, CO with a very strong,
fiery haired Celt as the central character. It also deals with
harping and heavy metal and makes some wonderful social commentary.
It is at heart a love story. Two of her other books, "Strands of
Starlight" and "Strands of Sunlight" are also well written with
strong womyn characters. Elves, witches, fantasy, reality, etc.
etc. They are better than I think I am describing them!

Re:
Lesbian Fiction
I wish I could be of more help here, but lesbian lit was never high
on my list of reading material (apologies!) I did read a book called
"Palomino" by Elizabeth Jolley (Australian author, from what I
remember) that I liked- but as it's out of print, it may be hard to
find. It was a good story, though, I read it several
times!
(P.S.-Amazonite... I'm not Dave Lister, I don't like
lager, however, I do like avoiding work- look at all the time I've
wasted here!)

Re:

Well, hey I got two responses, yay! I was starting to wonder if I
smelled funny or something...
Maybe like me everyone's too busy here at TX to read write right
now. But who knows, maybe someone will come on with a whole big list
o' books and make me happy.....
Runt--are you a Dwarfie fan, too? I was kind of smokin' you
out with vindaloo question. I love Red Dwarf because it is one of
the funniest shows I've ever seen. Just the right mix of Brit humor,
insanity, stupidity, intelligence and downright silliness. Wish I
got it here where I live. Oh well. If you are not a Dwarfie, well, I
guess in the words of Emily Litella--Nevermind!

Re:
Lesbian Fiction
Here is a good place to go to look for Lesbian
fiction:
www.naiadpress.com
They are publishers of
lesbian books. In fact they are or were the biggest publisher of
lesbian books in the country. Most of the aforementioned authors
have at one time or another gone through Naiad. This is a good
starting place for you to get a lot of summaries of what the books
are about and you can order directly from them as well, or go to
Amazon, BN or Borders.
Some of my favorite authors
are:
Katherine Forrest - romance and mystery Claire McNab
- mystery Karin Kallmaker - Romance (she really is the
best!) Laura Adams (this is Karin K as well) - science
fiction Jackie Calhoun - General Catherine Ennis -
General Jennifer Fulton Sarah Aldridge
These are just
to name a few. I hope that this helps. I go through periods of only
wanting to read lesbian fiction, so I just go to my 100's of books
and start reading them again! *LOL*

Re:
Lesbian Fiction
COOL!!!!! Thanks everyone! I know there's tons of books out there,
it's just a matter of finding them. Nice to know of a website
listing I can check out, too. I love to read, and most of my
favorite books don't have lesbian characters. I get kind of tired of
that!!! I want to read about people like me, too. I want to read
about two womyn in love for a change!

Re:
Lesbian Fiction
Here's some older fantasy - sci-fi. They are actually mainstream,
but the main characters end up together. Megan and Shkai'ra. It's
the Fifth Millennium series by S.M. Stirling and Shirley Meier.
Actually if you love Xena, you'll love this series.
They're from the early 90's so I'm not sure how easy it will be to
find them, but they're definately worth checking out. - "Saber
& Shadow" by S.M. Stirling & Shirely Meier - "The Cage"
by S.M. Stirling & Shirley Meier - "Shadow's Daughter" by
Shirley Meier - "Shadow's Son" by Shirley Meier, S.M. Stirling,
Karen Wehrstein - "Snowbrother" by S.M. Stirling Last time I
check Barnes & Noble and Borders had them. I'm sure you can
order them. I re-read them just because I love the characters so
much. Hope this helps. - Raven
"I love the smell of warrior sweat in the morning" - Xena ("The
Furies") |

Re:

Raven,
I love those Stirling/Meier series! I read them well
before Xena every came to be. If you like women warriors /
characters and love, then I second this recommendation. In another
of Stirling's later books, Island in the Sea of Time, he makes a
reference to Xena the show. He usually features strong women
characters. Another series I liked was John Varley's "Titan",
"Demon", "Wizard" series. It's sci fi / fantasy too.
There
was a good book list / discussion going on the nutforum. If it ever
comes up again, check it out. Lots of recommendations, books with
lesbian slant.
