Rev Bem
During all of the discussion which
have appeared to date on this board, one of my favorite characters
has been ignored - Rev Bem. It's hard to imagine hugging a Magog,
but I'd love to hug the Rev. What a good person! A little Gandhi
like, but with an edge, Rev can be a dangerous
opponent.
"It's not wise to annoy a Magog with a
headache."
I loved the scenes between the Rev and Harper in
"Harper 2.0". He was so genuinely hurt by Harper's revulsion, and he
tried so hard to be understanding. "It's alright, Dylan, I'll go."
When he does lose his temper, and Dylan helps him control
himself, he comes to Harper and apologizes so contritely. I loved
the way he slipped the pillow behind Harper's back, nice touch. If
only we all could be as kind and caring as the Rev.

Re: Rev Bem
That episode sure showed us some of
his demons and the reason for them but I have trouble embracing the
idea of a cannibal as anything but a murderer. I like his philosophy
very much, but still....

Re: Rev Bem
Red, You're forgetting the famous
scene in the Garage Sale episode of Andromeda:
Used Part
Salesman/Alien: "Keep that Cannibal away from me!"
Harper:
"Cannibal? No - Magog don't eat their own kind."
They only
eat other species, Red - er, uh, so do we.
Ain't it awful?
It's their reproductive methods which I really find disgusting. I
think the shows writers should have drawn the line at the Magog
eating humans. The other really makes them repulsive. But Rev is
so lovable - it shows you that you can't judge an individual as part
of a pack. - I know what you mean though, it is tough to overcome. I
really don't think of Rev as being a Magog anymore. And Tyr, in many
ways, his losing some of his Nietzschean attitudes. We can do
without them too.
I have to admit that Rev's Wayism appeals
to me, but, like Tyr, I think a little pragmatism is called for.
Sometimes I love Tyr's wisecracks about Wayism when the Rev gets too
Way Out. (Giggle)

Re: Rev Bem
But
LC, we eat
spiecies of animals not of people. I remember a line I like in one
of the first Star Trek movies that it is prejudice to assume that
all people are humans when in fact that are whatever spieces of
their peoples. Uh, did that make since? But Bem eats other people
not what we would consider to be animals.

LC,
do you need to borrow my glasses?
I wonder if
he hurts himself when he scratches.

Re: Rev Bem
I probably could use your glasses,
but you're judging by appearances, Red! Rev is lovable because of
his loving attitudes and mannerisms. I love it when someone does
something nasty to him, and he replies (with a slight edge in his
voice) "Bless you too."
Rev is lovable because he is a loving
person.
The Rev is obviously very fond of Trance, and I
think there is a spiritual bond there. Beka too. Remember in "Double
Helix" when the Nietzscheans attack, and Beka is getting the worst
of it - Rev leaps to her defense.

Re: Rev Bem
You're up late LC. You know
you are right about Bem being loveable inside, he has a soul that
shines through all that outer ugliness and a wisdom exudes itself.
But the ugliness for me is that he is still a cannibal at heart!!!
What do you think he eats on board the Andromeda?

Re: Rev Bem
Well, at least he's not eating his
shipmates.
In one episode, he showed a Than his grub farm
(what a pun). I'm sure Trance keeps him well supplied with
hydraponic vegetables.
But he's NOT a cannibal, Red, the
Magog don't eat other Magog (okay- it's a technicality). Rev doesn't
eat humans, so you can't blame him for what the other Magog do.
Future episodes may reveal that the Magog are under the
direction of that Quickilver Messenger with the red eyes.
Perhaps then they will lay all the blame for the more unlovely
Magog characteristics at the door of that Thing. They may do
that to make Rev more appealing. Don't know.

Re: Rev Bem
Hello, LadyCorinth,
I'm
pleased to meet you, as my handle "The Reverend" shows, I am an
admirer of Rev Bem (made a typo when I registered, sorry).
As
a brother who used to think that Tyr's way of doing things was "The
Way" I have come to realize that Rev's "way" is better. I think the
RevBem is really centered, know what I mean?
He still
protects his friends and the defenseless, as you mentioned, he went
to Beka's defense. I hope they do a show about Rev's conversion to
the Way. I know how I got there, I'd like to see what path he took.
Have a good day!
The Reverend

Re: Rev Bem
How do you do, "The Reverend" I
don't know how you would fix that typo in your handle, but it
doesn't matter.
Glad to meet another Rev fan, as well as
someone who is interested in "the Way". Hope you will join in our
Andromeda discussions.
