The Whole Team is Great
Star Trek worked because of the
chemistry among the crew members - it wasn't just Captain Kirk, or
Spock - it was McCoy and Scottie and Uhura, and Sulu and even
Checkov.
It also worked because the writing was great, and
the scripts were very imaginative.
I see the same success
traits in Andromeda, even though the characters and flavor are very
different. What makes Andromeda even more interesting is the
conflicts among the crew. The Enterprise was staffed by professional
officers of StarFleet - all in agreement with the mission of the
Enterprise, and all supportive of the Captain. Dylan obviously
cannot really "command" the crew of Andromeda, he has nothing but
his personal charisma, charm and natural leadership ability to hold
the crew together, and the "glue" is the ship herself. Life is a
little safer and more comfortable on the Andromeda than the in the
"unforgiving universe" outside. What really holds the crew together
is an unspoken, but very real affection for each other. Harper,
Trance, Rev and Beka were a team before they met Dylan, and it was
obvious from the first episode that the four of them had a
rapport.
Beka has developed a real respect for Tyr's
abilities, and I suspect he was the "Lancelot" in the dream she
mentioned in this week's episode (rather to her chagrin).
Tyr, in spite of himself, likes Dylan and respects him. He
respects Beka's ability as a pilot, and is very conscious of the
power that Andromeda offers. He even grudgingly acknowledges
Harper's abilities, calling him, "the Little Professor".
Harper's flip remarks really rile him. He has a real problem living
day in and day out with Rev Bem, not just because Rev is a Magog,
which disgusts him, but because Rev's "Wayism" conflicts with Tyr's
philosophy; I think that somewhere down deep, Tyr is afraid that at
least some of what Rev preaches may be true, and Tyr just can't deal
with that.
I think the writers have done amazing job in
creating a whole crew of really strong, interesting characters. They
are even more interesting that the crew of the enterprise. I
haven't even mentioned the ship herself, Andromeda. The casting here
was superb.
Well, I guess you can tell I really love the
show.

Re: The Whole Team is Great
LC, you hit the nail on the head with each
character. I haven't decided yet who my favorite character is, it
changes every week, ha! But I like the way they highlight a
character each week to allow us to get to know them. Though Tyr is
the most gorgeous I'm having the most trouble liking him. Last weeks
ep with him as the calvery coming to help his team-mates endeared
him a little more to me. Of course they always have to have someone
create friction to keep things spicy but I'm glad to see they also
balance it with loyalty.

Re: The Whole Team is Great
Red,
I had the same problem
with the Tyr character. I didn't like Nietzsche when I read him
in school, and his philosophy gave rise to Nazism. So I had a big
problem with the "Nietzscheans" as a whole. I think that the writers
took a big risk by using that label.
Even though I am, I
admit, wildly attracted to Tyr physically, I would not want to be in
a relationship with someone who has been trained from birth to be
treacherous. His actions in some of the episodes were a definite
turn-off. His abandonment of Freya in Double Helix is a good
example. Also the scene where he "threatened" Trance (and she does
the old mind trick on him, LOL). I loved the scene when Trance
tripped him with her tail and he fell on his rear end!!!!! Serves
him right!
On the other hand, there was the scene where he
cried over the death of the 100,000 Nietzscheans.
It sounds
like you haven't seen the new episode, "Music of a Distant Drum."
Tyr undergoes a real change in this episode, and shows a soft and
noble side to his character. It totally reversed my bad opinion of
him. There are spoilers in my episode discussion, so you may not
want to look at it if you haven't seen the ep already.
At
any rate, you have to admit Tyr is a fascinating
character.

Re: The Whole Team is Great
I'll see that episode tonight and
get back to you on that. I am attracted to the tortured Tyr in a
way. Struggling to find his way in a world that tried and apparently
killed most of his people. I think they will soften him up some, but
he'll always have that edge so that he can play against
Dylan.

Re: The Whole Team is Great
That's right, Red, they need the Tyr
character to provide contrast to Dylan, and generate some
suspense.
I miss having Murdock around, he always provides
interesting input.
I really love RevBem too. Even Tyr
doesn't mess with him.
