Hello all!
Just a few quick reminders for you this time around -- please contact your state reps and let them know who you are! Not sure who your rep is? Check our website at http://members.aol.com/tybrenn/Mbr_Loc.html (thanks to Sandy for all her hard work retooling it!) to find out. Also, we need a new rep for the sunny state of Florida -- anyone interested should let one of us know.
Finally, for those of you attending the gatherings in Aspen or Pacific Grove or anywhere else on Spaceship Earth to commemorate October 12 this year, please take a moment to jot down your feelings about the event (or non-event) you took part in. We'll be holding next month's newsletter until after the 12th, so please get your stories, poems, etc. in as soon as possible to be included in this special issue.
And as always, we'd love to "print" anything you have to share -- remember, my friends, this is YOUR organization.
Thank you to Sandy, Ellen and Beth for all the hard work you guys do -- we wouldn't be here without you! -- and thanks always to Marcelle and Theresa for your ongoing inspiration.
My heart to yours,
Ann

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR (Ellen L. Quinn elq@gateway.net)

Dear Friends,
John Denver lives on and I can prove it! His vision is shared by so many. For example, after moving to San Diego, CA this summer, I am having a wonderful experience in learning about the history and growth and development of this city. There is a mainstream focus on taking care of the planet, living with Nature and raising consciousness in a public way. Not only with recycling pick-up and such things, but also in terms of the intentions behind the area "attractions", for example. The San Diego Zoo, Sea World and the nearby Wild Animal Park are set in amazing surroundings, apparently built withconsideration for the surrounding landscape and terrain in mind. Additionally, each of these places has a strong focus on education of the public about animals, plants, and wildlife, our connection with them, and how we can better care for them, the Earth and ourselves in the process. Anyway, I'm impressed, to say the least. And, I highly recommend a visit to this area, should anyone be looking for vacation ideas! (Feel free to contact me, should you be coming this way.)
In any case, it has done my heart good to see reflections of what John Denver inspired in so many of us in action. I see his impact in my life intensely this past year, for some reason, both with this relocation and with my Colorado vacation in July, among other things. I have seen mountains, valleys, sunsets and rivers like never before. I have fallen more deeply in love with the terrain of this planet. I have seen John in birds flying, eagles nesting, nearby aeronautics, hang-gliding, hot-air ballooningÖall of this reminds me of him. I KNOW he's around. And, I know many of you agree he will never really be goneÖ
Wishing you peace,
Ellen
P.S. PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE HAD A CHANGE OF E-MAIL ADDRESS. YOU CAN

RAISING MONEY FOR A BENCH/KIOSK IN MEMORY OF JOHN:
On Long Island is a conservation/environmental group called the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference. They are a non-profit organization which maintains trails and conserves available open spaces here on the Island. At the end of some of their larger trails are kiosks for the weary hikers. There are also benches strategically placed on some of the trails, both midway and at the end. There are 2 State Parks out here that have yet to have a bench ($300) or a kiosk ($500) dedicated to anybody so I thought...why not to our John?! A State Park has a lot more hikers than a small park, so many people would get to see a plaque with John's name on it.
So, we thought, "LET'S DO IT!" There are 2 ways we can raise the money. First, we accept any and all donations. Secondly, we had a very generous offer from Mary in Arizona <discipleofdenver@vtc.net>. She is offering a shirt fundraiser similar to what Rosemary Good did for the NYC bench. If you send her a shirt (poly/cotton combo is the best) along with a SASE Priority Mail envelope (the cost is $3.20), she will professionally iron on a JD snowflake, from 4" over the left pocket or up to 14" in the middle of the shirt. She suggests a light color or royal blue shirt for the snowflake to really look great. The cost for this is $20. ALL PROCEEDS go to the bench/kiosk. Mary is offering to do this without any remuneration.
...AND...
WE'VE GOT THE BENCH!... plus another $100 towards ANOTHER bench!!! We reached the $300 mark on Thursday (8/19/99). More is still coming in - both from Mary <discipleofdenver@vtc.net> for her t-shirts and from the CD's from Chris and Pete. For further details, go to http://come.to/JohnDenverFundraiser.
Many thanks to all of you who have supported this fundraiser, some financially, a lot of you with your words and spirit. They all mean a lot to Mary and I and we are truly grateful.
ONWARD TOWARDS BENCH #2!
TO ORDER: Please make all checks out to, "LI Greenbelt Trail Conference." If you are sending money only, please mail it to:
Joan Kurtz
7 Villett Drive
East Setauket, NY 11733
If you are helping with the shirt fundraiser, please send your shirt, the Priority Letter envelope, pre-addressed and paid for, and your check to:

Cochise, AZ 85606

Just for your information, here are some facts about the two State Parks that can
have a bench or kiosk erected commemorating our John:
Sunken Meadow State Park has over 1200 acres and include bathing on the Long Island Sound, bicycling on their beautiful boardwalk, hiking on their trails, picnic areas, refreshment stands and golf facilities. There are three miles of beach, with the west end of the shoreline meeting tall glacier-formed bluffs. The east end of the park terminates at the mouth of the Nissequogue River. There are many acres of undeveloped and heavily wooded rolling hills with a wide range of flora and fauna! The Greenbelt Trail starts with a wooden footbridge over a creek. A perfect spot for a bench with John's name on it, don't you think?
OR
Connetquot River State Park has over 3400 acres with diverse programs and activities geared to develop awareness of the value and beauty of this natural area of Long Island. My daughter and I hiked in this park last year on the first anniversary of John's death. Along the trail we came across deer standing no more than 9 feet away from us, just standing and watching us as we quietly walked by them. The Park also includes a trout hatchery, an 18th century gristmill, bridle paths and educational activities run by the parks department. Again, either a bench or kiosk would be perfect along the Greenbelt Trail in this park.
Shalom - Peace
Joan (and Mary)

MEMORIAL PLAQUE OKAYED FOR PACIFIC GROVE
From the Sept. 18, 1999 article in the Monterey County Herald:
"DENVER FANS' MEMORIAL EFFORT GAINS SWAY WITH PASSAGE OF TIME - By Melissa
Hecksher, "Herald" Staff Writer
P.G. Council, who once feared stampede, is not as worried these days. It's been almost two years since John Denver's plane plunged into the ocean off Pacific Grove. Now, not too far from his watery grave, a local activist plans to construct a memorial so Denver fans have a place to make their flower-filled pilgrimages.
"Millions of people were inspired by him," said Pacific Grove resident Helaine Clark in a letter to the City Council. "On the anniversary of his fatal accident, they arrive to do a tribute, and it would be very comforting for them to have a rock marking his ocean grave where they can place their flowers and notes."
Clark was given preliminary approval to put a small bronze plaque on the shoreline near where Denver's plane crashed on October 12, 1997. "I am not asking for a marker for someone who died somewhere else," said Clark, also known for her crusade against raccoon euthanasia. "Major parts of John Denver's physical being were left behind in our ocean and have become part of its ecosystem. This is his gravesite."
Until now, the council had been reluctant to construct a memorial for Denver for fear that it would attract crowds and disrupt the quiet residential neighborhood at Asilomar, said City Manager Mike Huse. "We weren't sure how many people would be coming to Pacific Grove as a result of this tragedy," said Huse, who will oversee the project along with Pacific Grove Mayor Sandy Koffman and Councilman Jim Costello.
"It was a wild scene down there with large numbers of television trucks and people driving by," he said. "The council thought (a memorial) was something that would attract people and would have an impact on the shoreline, the neighborhood and the streets."
But when Clark proposed the idea Tuesday, the council was unanimously in favor of the plaque. "It's been two years and it hasn't resulted in what was feared," Huse said. "We want to put something down there that is subtle yet marks the area and reminds people how Denver made his mark on humanity."
The plaque, proposed to be about 14 by 14 inches, will be set into an existing boulder at the car turnout on Ocean View Boulevard between Acropolis Avenue and Asilomar Boulevard, the closest on-shore spot to where the plane crashed.
Denver's family - his mother, three children, brother, and two ex-wives - will pay for and determine the wording of the plaque. Clark hopes it will say something like this:
"John Denver (Henry John Deutschendorf) 1943-1997
Loving son, father, brother, husband, friend and inspiration.
"When I die I want to come back as an eagle."

INTERNATIONAL COASTAL CLEANUP AND LITTER SURVEY DAY
Saturday, September 18, was International Coastal Cleanup and Litter Survey Day. The mission of the International Coastal Cleanup is to REMOVE debris from the shorelines, waterways, and beaches of the world's lakes, rivers, and oceans; to COLLECT valuable information on the amount and types of debris; and to EDUCATE people on the issue of marine debris. The information collected from the cleanup will be used to effect positive change - on all levels, from individual to international - to reduce marine debris and enhance conservation.
The International Coastal Cleanup for 1999 is focusing on rivers and their watersheds as contributors to the water quality of the ocean and the shore. The Center for Marine Conservation web site has some valuable information on coastal clean-ups (though they don't have the 1999 info posted yet). The URL is http://www.cmc-ocean.org/.

COLORADO WILDERNESS BILLS
Congress is considering no fewer than five different bills to designate Wilderness in Colorado on Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management lands. This is a remarkable testament to the rugged scenery and wild adventures that Colorado wilderness offers, from the Rocky Mountains to the western Canyon Country.
Colorado Wilderness needs the support of *all* Americans, and you can send a fax
asking your Representative and Senators to support Wilderness at http://www.wilderness.org/ccc/fourcorners/
colorado/coloradowild.htm. The Wilderness Society (TWS) is actively supporting
three of the bills and working to improve the other two, which contain troubling
language.
Here's information on the five bills and their status:
COLORADO WILDERNESS ACT (HR 829) -- For the first time, would comprehensively protect lower-elevation canyon country lands managed by the BLM by designating Wilderness on 1.1 million acres of BLM land and 300,000 acres of adjacent National Forest lands. Supported by TWS & a coalition of over 100 conservation and recreation groups, several local governments, and 80 Colorado businesses.
JAMES PEAK WILDERNESS (HR 2177) -- Would designate as Wilderness 22,000+ acres of the popular James Peak area in the Arapaho National Forest north of Denver. Supported by TWS.
ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK WILDERNESS (HR 2178) -- Would protect 249,562
acres of Rocky Mountain National Park as wilderness (90+% of Park).
Supported by National Park Service and conservation groups, including TWS.
SPANISH PEAKS WILDERNESS (H.R. 898/S 503) -- Would protect as wilderness the towering Spanish Peaks, in the San Isabel Nat'l Forest (south central Colorado). Unfortunately, this 18,000-acre wilderness bill would open up to motorized travel the old Bulls Eye Mine route deep into the heart of the wilderness, a provision that TWS is working to remove.
BLACK CANYON NAT'L PARK & GUNNISON GORGE NAT'L CONSERVATION AREA (S 323/HR
1165) -- Would expand & change the Black Canyon Nat'l Monument into a Nat'l Park
and add 4,400 acres of designated Wilderness. Would also establish the Gunnison Gorge
Nat'l Conservation Area (NCA), and designate 17,700-acre Gunnison Gorge Wilderness
within the NCA. Conservationists have had concerns with language managing ORV
use within the area and water rights.
TAKE ACTION! Please contact your Senators and Representative and ask them to support and strengthen these bills.

FOREST SERVICE TO DOUBLE LOGGING IN 3 SIERRA NATIONAL FORESTS
The Forest Service announced last Friday that it will proceed with the "full implementation" option (Alternative 2) contained in the draft Quincy Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) (WildAlert, 7/16/99). Alternative 2 will more than double logging on National Forests in northern California, from 124 million board feet to 286 million board feet, and require construction of 100 miles of new roads. The only modification from DEIS was a prohibition on entering suitable spotted owl habitat until the Sierra-wide EIS establishes new spotted owl management guidelines.
In an August statement, The Wilderness Society stated: "The decision shows the U.S. Forest Service is out of touch with scientists and the overwhelming majority of Americans who favor less logging on our national forests, not more. The full-scale implementation of the plan will cause serious environmental damage and violates existing environmental laws, for example, the National Environmental Policy Act that requires an environmental impact study before taking action."

Hello Fellow IAT Members!
I had the best experience the other day, and I had to share it with all of you. I flew an airplane! It gives me goose bumps just to write that!
Being up in the sky, almost floating, was incredible. It really puts things in perspective. Some people I know cannot understand why I would want to learn how to fly considering how much I love John and how he died. But, I wanted to know what it felt like to be up there and be at the controls and just fly. I related my experience to an egroup, and one of the members wrote a very poignant comment back, "To me, it was way more part of his LIFE, than it was his death. You can see the joy on his face when he's flying." I now understand why John loved it so much.
We took off in a very small airplane on Friday the 10th. My instructor, Jim, handled the take-off and landing. I just held the controls and he explained to me what he was doing. I must say that the take-off and landing were very smooth compared to the ones that I had experienced in larger airplanes. Once up in the clear blue sky, Jim just said, "She's all yours." At first I was terrified, to say the least! But, the plane really flies itself. It is very similar to driving a boat...it goes straight unless you tell it otherwise or unless the wind is strong. I learned how to ascend, descend, and make right and left turns. I live in an area of Idaho called the Palouse. It is mostly farm land, with beautiful rolling hills. In that little airplane looking down was beautiful-it looked just like a quilt of yellows, greens, and browns that was tossed on the ground. You could see forever! Even through I have flown a number of times in commercial jets to get from here to there, the view was different in some way. I guess being in such a small airplane with such big windows made me feel more a part of the air and sky and land than being in a large plane with tiny windows.
This may sound bizarre, but I could tell that John was there. I mean, I feel him in every part of my life, but his presence for me was very strong when I was up in the sky.
My most prized possession is a denim shirt that my Mother made for my Father. It is just like the one that John wore on the cover of the album "Spirit"- it has a beautiful sunburst on the shoulder and I keep my ticket stubs from John Denver concerts in the pockets. I wear it only on the most special of occasions, and this counted as very special! And yes, up there, I did say "Far Out!"
It also made me realize more than ever that "It's About Time" to make a difference in the world. Up there it is very obvious how we are all connected to each other- we are so small compared to the world and life, but We are more than we seem." as John sings to us.
In addition to that, "It's About Time" to follow our dreams, and to honor John in our lives everyday. He did teach us by his actions and with his music to make a difference in our world, but he also tried to show us to live life to its fullest. In an interview he told Rolling Stone Magazine that "There's no such thing as wasting time in my dictionary." And I agree. But, we have to realize that every moment is special and we should take advantage of that. In so many songs he told us of loving completely, loving life and celebrating who we are. That is what my adventure in flying was about- loving my life and honoring him and the impact he has on my life.

Here's something neat from one of our younger members. For those of you who
have been around a while (like me, I might add ;D), you might recall feeling this
way yourself, about 20 years ago -- AS
A lot of people ask me "Why John Denver?" "Why not Backstreet Boys or N Sync?" A lot of times I catch myself asking "why not John Denver?" My name is Jessica, I am 13 years old and a HUGE fan of John Denver. Many people wonder if it is difficult for me to love such a talented person whose heyday was in the 1970's when we are living, in my opinion, in the mostly untalented 1990's. I have to say that it is pretty hard to love John when my friends and peers listen to so called "singers" Like "Kid Rock" and "Marilyn Manson". My friends stick by me and think it's ok because they say "Its your life, you can listen to whatever makes you happy." I'm happy to have friends like them. But no one can compare to my best friend Terri, who I met over the internet, she too is a John Denver fan, she might be a little bit older than me but age doesn't matter and I can tell her anything, especially when it has to do with John! I say with great regret that I didn't really know who John was until October 13th, 1997. I remember I was home sick and my mom was flipping through the channels when she stopped on CNN, they were doing a report on John. I sat there and thought to myself "He is so cute!" I thought of him a few times after that, but it was like in the back of my mind. Not until the last week of 1997, I was watching a show called "1997, Year in Review" they did a part called "Tributes" and I saw John, I thought, "Hey that's that guy again!' after that show ended, I went through the channels and I saw "Oh, God!" for the first time. "There he is again!" I thought. I went through the channels to go to the "Preview Channel" to see if hopefully I didn't miss much, on the way back to the channel "Oh, God!" was on, I happened to hit the right channel at the right time, there he was again! I was so excited! " I thought "This is so cool, this is unbelievable!" This time, he was on A&E on the WILDlife Concert. Now when I think of that night, I know some how it was a sign from John. From that night on, I was hooked on John!
To this day, I am totally obsessed with John, sometimes it drives my friends crazy! I have turned my room into a little memorial for John, with pictures of him covering my walls, I hope soon it will look like wall paper! I started the guitar about a year ago, and I always try to put my poems to music, make them into songs. I hope to become a singer one day, to pick up and perform John's songs where sadly he left off. Loving John has come with a small price to pay like when it comes to other kids my age who don't understand the beauty of John Denver songs, but nothing will ever change my mind about John being one of the greats, nothing will change my mind about John being such a beautiful person. It may be hard sometimes for a 13 year old like me to love him as I do among others my age who would think of him as a joke. John Denver will forever stay in my heart as he will in the hearts of everyone who loves him.
Thank you for letting me write for the newsletter, I enjoyed it and I hope I can do this again : )
Love
Jessica

1. Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.
2. Don't believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.
3. When you say, "I love you", mean it.
4. When you say, "I'm sorry", look the person in the eye.
5. Believe in love at first sight.
6. Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it's the only way to
live life completely.
7. Don't judge people by their relatives.
8. Talk slowly but think quickly.
9. Approach love and cooking with reckless abandon.
10. Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
11. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.
12. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
13. Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice.
14. Never interrupt when you are being flattered.
15. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.
16. Open your arms to change, but don't let go of your values.
17. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
18. Be gentle with the earth.
19. Trust in God but lock your car.
20. Remember the three R's: Respect for self; Respect for others; Responsibility
for all your actions.
21. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.
22. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll get
to enjoy it a second time.
