LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
*********************************************************************
Dear Friends,
Welcome to summer 2002! I'm just back from yet another Peace Cloth excursion, this
time, in my home town of NYC. We were invited to participate in Children's Day,
a free event previously held at the World Trade Center, but situated this year at
the South Street Seaport. For those who have never been here, this is a part of
the city where New York's nautical past is celebrated. It includes permanent moorage
for two tall ships that can be explored, a museum and of course, no tourist area
would be complete without shopping and dining!
Last year, attendance at Children's Day topped out at 35,000, and this year also
proved to be a big success for the organizers. While I don't know if quite this
many showed up, it sure felt like it! The Cloth was given a shady display area on
long banquet-type tables, and on another table, we had our customary panel for people
to inscribe their message of peace, or perhaps just their name. Because of the location
of this event, we had many renderings of the Twin Towers, along with "I Love
NY" -- it was obvious what was on their minds here, as you would expect. Luckily,
I brought along 10 yards of cloth and almost all of it became colorfully decoratored,
so we have almost a complete new panel from the event.
On Saturday night, Channel 9 (Fox) News covered the event, and interviewed two of
our board members, courtesy of Rolland Smith, long-time friend of JD's, and member
of Windstar's Board of Directors. Rolland is a fixture in New York TV journalism,
having appeared on a number of local evening news programs, and is the current anchor
for Channel 9 News' 10 PM show. Some of you will also remember him as an emcee of
the 1995 Choices for the Future Symposium. Rolland produced a wonderful voice-over
for the piece and the resultant clip had our interviews along with video and still
shots of John -- overall, they did a tremendous job. Look for that some time in
the future on the Peace Cloth's website.
My heart to yours,
Ann

Hello Rocky Mountain High Members and JD Fans,

Hi Fans,
Our favorite pianist/keyboardist, Chris Nole has a great new CD out of beautiful
instrumental songs. This is the symphonic, melodic side of this very talented musician,
rather than the funky, bluesy side. Unlike "Barrel House Boogie Piano"
these very pretty songs are more reminiscent of Chris' earlier "Three Seasons".
In fact, he has a
remake of one of the songs on "Three Seasons", A Melody of Grace. The rest
of "Songs of the High Country" take me to that special place that, I'm
sure, we all wish to be, the High Country; the land of "Singing Skies and Dancing
Waters"(to quote my favorite artist of all, JD). You must give this one a listen
for sure. Available from Roadhouse Records or ChrisNole.com.
Peace--Charlie

Excerpted from LEARNING FROM LEGENDS, "Acoustic Guitar" magazine, August
2002:
"'Learn to Play the Songs of John Denver' is taught by Pete Huttlinger, Denver's
lead guitarist from 1994 until the songwriter's death in 1997. The 90-minute video
works through guitar arrangements of some of Denver's most famous songs, including
"Annie's Song", "Fly Away", and "Rocky Mountain High".
As in all of these videos, once each piece is explained in detail, the song is played
again with a split screen that allows you to focus on either the right or left hand.
Techniques discussed include folk strumming patterns and Travis picking. Throughout
the video, Huttlinger's respect and admiration for Denver is evident. Because the
guitar parts are so lush and melodic, 'Learn to Play the Songs of John Denver' is
a great resource for any acoustic guitarist, even those who might be unfamiliar with
the works of the late, great singer-songwriter."

ROY RIVERS IN TEXAS
From: Julie McClain bluebonnetgirl@netzero.net:
We had a great time out at Rory and Connie Young's home on Sunday night. Didn't have
as many folks as usual, several were out of town, but it was actually kind of nice
and cozy.
Roy Rivers came out and wowed us with his music. As I mentioned before, he moved
here to Garland, Texas from Utah a month ago. He said that in Utah, he was looked
down upon for singing John's songs. He does sound similar to John and yes -- wears
round glasses, which he said he has worn almost all his life, before he even knew
of JD, and so people there think he is just trying to be John and make money off
of it. He doesn't have the blond hair though. We convinced him that he could sing
all the John songs he wanted to for us and around here.
His tribute song was fabulous. I believe it may have been Jane Wise who stated right
after he sang it, that she was so honored to be sitting in a room with the two people
who wrote the very best tribute songs to John, and everyone was in agreement. (She
was referring to mine and his.) He sang several of his own songs for us too. They
are treasures. His songs are very reminiscent of songs John would have wrote He didn't
bring any CDs with him because he didn't know how well received he would be. He didn't
know that Texas was such a songwriters paradise. His plans are to put a band together
and move forward with his music. He even talked to me about singing harmony with
him! He said he has already written five new songs since being here!
If you missed my earlier post, you can go to www.royrivers.com
and hear his songs. We partied late into the night, and a good time was had by all!

From: Georgiann McDaniel: RockyMtnHaven@aol.com
Hi! My name is Georgiann McDaniel. I moved from
Maryland to Colorado in May 1997, as I had great hopes of meeting and working with
John Denver. That didn't happen -- he crossed over before I ever met him. BUT, I
feel he has guided me in many ways to the things I now do. First, I became a Massage
Therapist and a Reiki Master. That has been wonderful. I work as a Massage Therapist
in Glenwood Springs at the Vapor Caves and have my own business out of my home in
Battlement Mesa, CO. I named it for John: Mountain Angel Massage and Bodywork. However,
when I first moved to Colorado, I was going to make little angels. After John passed,
I couldn't do it. But now after five years, I have moved ahead and started the process
of doing something else for John.
I had a Website created that is an On-Line store. It carries thousands of gift items,
ranging from Angels to toys to luggage to candles, collectibles, etc. THAT is not
the important part. What is, is that with each purchase, a donation will be made
to the National Wildlife Federation and to Windstar, founded by John Denver and Tom
Crum. That is MY way of doing something to help the Wildlife and help save our environment,
things that are important to me and of importance to JOHN. I have NOT made my angels
yet, but I still plan to do that.
The name of this venture is again named for John: Mountain Angel Specialty Gifts.
The Website is: www.mountainangelspecialtygifts.com.
Please visit!
Love, light, peace and joy,
Georgiann

ENVIRONMENTAL NEWS

DenLines, June 12, 2002
1. MAKING YOUR VOICES HEARD: Sign our petition to help save wolves
In response to actor Ed Asner's e-mail to DEN members, more than 25,000 supporters
have signed our petition urging Interior Secretary Gale Norton not to strip legal
protections from endangered gray wolves. Help us reach our goal of 1 million signatures.
Wolves are just now making a comeback in America, but powerful special interests
are working to throw these magnificent animals to the mercy of states like Idaho,
whose legislature has voted to eradicate them "by whatever means necessary."
To sign our petition, go to http://www.savewolves.org
and help spread the word by forwarding it to friends.
2. STRESSED OUT: Study finds new evidence of snowmobiles' harm to wolves, elk
Snowmobiling in our national parks can stress wolves and elk so much that it harms
their ability to fight off diseases, according to a study by Montana State University.
The study found elevated levels of stress hormones in wolves and elk during the heaviest
snowmobile use. These hormones can shut down the animals' immune systems. Despite
this study and others showing the harm caused by snowmobiles, the National Park Service
is thinking about reversing its plan to ban the machines from Yellowstone and Grand
Teton national parks. Thanks to the nearly 9,000 DEN members who sent e-mails to
the park service last month in support of the ban. We'll keep you posted on developments.
3. SAVE OUR FORESTS: Congress may act to preserve wild lands
With loggers ready to invade some of America's last remaining pristine forests, many
members of Congress are trying to preserve nearly 60 million acres from tree-cutting
and road-building. The Bush administration is refusing to implement new federal rules
to do just that, even though they had been approved after an overwhelming showing
of national public support. Two House members introduced legislation last week with
172 co-sponsors to place the rules into law over the administration's opposition.
To learn more, click here: http://www.defenders.org/publiclands/habitat/roadless2.html
4. JUST LIVE WITH IT: Is that any way to deal with
global warming?
For the first time, the Bush administration acknowledged last week that burning oil,
coal and other fossil fuels is causing global warming. But rather than recommending
reductions in greenhouse gases, the administration suggested in a report that we
all just learn to adapt to the far-reaching consequences--including heat waves and
loss of Rocky Mountain meadows and some coastal marshes. Later, the president, who
opposes the Kyoto protocol to reduce greenhouse gases, tried to distance himself
from the report's conclusion that global warming was caused by industrial societies,
saying dismissively that he read the report put out by "the bureaucracy."
Japan, meanwhile, ratified the Kyoto agreement and promised to lobby the United States
to do the same.
5. EXTINCTION CRISIS: Nearly a quarter of all species of mammals have only 30 years
left
Nearly a quarter of all kinds of mammals face extinction within 30 years, according
to a new United Nations study. The list of the critically endangered include the
black rhino and Siberian tiger and the Amur leopard of Asia. The report blames human
activities, mainly the destruction of habitat and the introduction of alien species
from one part of the world to another. To read the report, click here http://www.unep.org/GEO/geo3/index.htm
6. BACK FROM THE DEAD: Scientists find 'extinct'
Amazonian bird
A rare Amazonian bird that was thought to be extinct for 45 years has been re-discovered.
Ironically, a road-paving team spotted the golden-crowned manakin in the heart of
the rain forest of Brazil. But conservationists say the bird is likely to become
extinct soon, for real this time, because of tree-cutting and road-building in the
rain forest.
One of the best and easiest ways to save birds and their habitat in coffee-growing
country is to buy shade-grown coffee. Migratory birds and small wildlife have found
a sanctuary in the forest-like environment of shade coffee farms. That's why Defenders
of Wildlife has teamed with the Thanksgiving Coffee Co. and Grounds for Sharing to
develop Java Forest shade-grown organic coffees. To learn more about Java Forest,
or place an order, visit http://www.javaforest.org
or call 1-866-766-6328.
