The Mud Hens play bluegrass favorites mixing in early country, swing, and other American melodies. Like birds on a wire, our fingers dance on the strings, staying true to acoustic traditions and writing our own songs and tunes as well.We perform at festivals, parties, weddings, nightclubs, and anywhere people gather to have fun.

The band is led by mandolinist Alan Bond, who has been playing for more than 35 years, and guitarist Elaine Bond, who harmonizes with him to achieve that high-lonesome sound. Recent performances have featured Dave Magram (banjo, pedal steel guitar), Suzanne Suwanda (bass), Mike Tater (fiddle), Charlie Edsall (lead guitar), Robert Cornelius (banjo, not pictured), and Gene Tortora (dobro, pictured above).

For those who don't know, "mud hen" is another name for the American coot, a black water bird. When you hear us — look out! You'll be in for a real "Cootenanny."

The new band, SUPER HOSS, rounds up hot pickers: Brian Godchaux (fiddle), Gene Tortora, (Dobro), Bruce Campbell (bass), plus Mud Hen members Elaine Bond (guitar) and Alan Bond (mandolin). Every Hoss has a big voice. We played at Ashkenaz July 28!

Hope to see you soon!

Nov. 9, 2003, Alan played the mandolin with Dan Hicks in Mill Valley at the High School Music Program Benefit (below).

Band Review from
San Francisco Bay Guardian

The voice of the American coot or mud hen (Fulica americana) taken from Sibley, David A., National Audubon Society: The Sibley Guide to Birds (2000) pg. 151:

" Voice: A variety of short, clucking notes: most with hollow, trumpeting quality and coarse, rattling undertone; usually lower than Common Moorhen. Most commonly a short single note krrp or prik, often strung together in a long series priKI priKI.... Voice of female low and nasal, male high and clear."
