Ballroom dancing is formal, social dancing. The two main styles of ballroom dancing, International and American, are enjoyed socially and competitively around the globe on stage, in film, and on television. Attire: Non-marking dress shoes and comfortable clothing. Sneakers not permitted.
- Ballroom: Provides instruction in the most popular forms of ballroom dance, including the rumba, cha-cha, and foxtrot. Ballroom 1 requires no dance experience! The course provides an introduction to the basic steps and patterns. Ballroom 2 requires knowledge of the basics of ballroom and latin dances. The course will introduce additional patterns, styling, and lead-and-follow technique.
- Salsa: Salsa is the hottest dance on the club scene today, emphasizing undulating body movement, sassy turns and compelling rhythms. Originating in 1950’s Cuba, it was greatly influenced by dancers and musicians in Puerto Rico, Miami and New York.
Types of dance covered will include:
- Cha-Cha: A spicy, upbeat Latin dance that is related to the Mambo (a slower version). It is a versatile dance that can easily be danced to many different styles of music, from classic Tito Puente to Santana or Ricky Martin.
- Rumba: The forerunner of other Latin dances. It's origins are rooted in the Cuban music. It has a slower rhythm than the Mambo, making it a great dance for beginners. The sensual Rumba is a wonderful introduction to the tradition of Latin dances, Latin music, and Latin body movement.
- Fox Trot: A smooth combination of slow and quick beats dances in a 4/4 rhythm. Reputedly named after Harry Fox, a popular Broadway singer and dancer, it is still as popular as ever, perfect for weddings and galas or a trip to the Rainbow Room in NYC. If you enjoy the music of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin or Ella Fitzgerald, you'll definitely want to learn the Foxtrot.
