Lance Corporal Mario Rodolfo Cadenas

Lance Corporal Mario Cadenas

"F"ox Company, 2nd Battalion, 23rd Marine Division fought in several major battles in Iraq, culminating in the battle for Baghdad, where they defeated enemy forces to take the eastern part of the city on April 8th. They were the first Marine Corps reservists to fight on the front lines since Korea.
Mario is finally stateside! He and his fellow Marines from Fox Company 2/23 returned after combat infantry service in Operation Iraqi Freedom and are now back at Camp Pendleton awaiting their new orders.

Miscellaneous News

A local station, Fox News, is following Mario's unit, Fox Company. They have been doing little snippets with each guy sending messages to their families. So, we got to see Mario!!! We got to see Matt Jemmet who is also in Mario's unit. He said the usual but then he said that he wanted to say hi to his brother, Travis, who is in Charlie Company (yup, one brother is with Mario and one brother is with Sean), and that he hopes they are still home and not in Iraq.(Too late)

Apr 16 - Note from Mark Oliva, Stars and Stripes re 2/23 - Thanks for the note. Unfortunately, I left 2/23 on April 10th. My e-mail was nonexistent while I was out there so I'm sorry I didn't get to this sooner. When I left, the battalion was in Baghdad and they were doing fine. They're a great group of guys and they're working their hearts out. They are a proud group of Marines and you should be proud of them. It was an honor to follow them through Iraq and become a part of them for just a little while.

I no longer have communication with the battalion, but know that when I left them, they were doing fine and in great spirits. There are still pockets of resistance in Baghdad, but not nearly the fight we expected. I wish I could be more help letting you know about your loved one, but that's about all I can tell you at this point.
Respectfully,
Mark Oliva
