History of the Capital Singers of Trenton

by Stan SzalewiczThe Capital Singers of Trenton

In the fall of 2005, Father Albert M. Anuszewski, pastor of Saint James (R.C.) Church, Trenton, asked music director Nancy Paolini to coordinate a Christmas choral concert for the parish. Because Saint James has a seasonal choir that convenes only for Christmas, Holy Week, Easter, and occasional special services, the prospect of preparing a full-length Christmas concert with a handful of volunteer singers at a time of year already fraught with extra church, family, and social obligations was daunting.

Nancy requested assistance from her vocal coach, Richard M. Loatman of DaCapo Studios in Trenton, who was then enlisted to recruit singers and rehearse and conduct the augmented choir. Richard invited local singers to supplement the core group from Saint James, chiefly from among students and associates whom he had called upon in the past to form ensembles for impromptu performances.

A large mixed chorus of 42 voices, which included a chamber chorus of ten singers, gathered for its first rehearsal in early November. Over the course of four Sunday evenings, the two groups learned a wide variety of seasonal music—sacred and secular, traditional and popular, accompanied and a cappella.

“Songs for the Christmas Season,” presented by Schola Cantorum on Friday, December 30, 2005 was well received by Saint James parishioners and guests. The singers agreed that the rehearsals and performance were a musically satisfying experience. At the time, no one knew that this event would be the impetus for the foundation of the Capital Singers of Trenton.

Early in the new year, Richard discussed with several of the singers who had participated in the Christmas concert his desire to establish a permanent choral ensemble that would rehearse monthly and present concerts in the greater-Trenton area. In addition to a core group of 22 singers, whose name would be chosen to reflect its association with New Jersey’s capital city, a second larger ensemble of more than 75 voices, named the Trenton Community Singers, would be established to join the Capital Singers occasionally for choral works that call for larger performing forces.

Fr. Albert graciously agreed to allow the Capital Singers of Trenton to use Saint James Church for rehearsals and as its principal concert venue. Monthly rehearsals commenced in late April and increased to bi-monthly meetings in September. In June, an executive board was chosen, officers elected, and two standing committees established (Publicity and Marketing, and Production and Library) to attend to the administrative affairs and routine behind-the-scenes tasks that support the artistic endeavors of the chorus.

The singing and non-singing members of the Capital Singers of Trenton have worked congenially and collaboratively to realize Richard Loatman’s vision of a musically sound chorus to perform in and represent the city of Trenton.

The Capital Singers of Trenton and the Trenton Community Singers presented their “Inaugural Concert” on Friday October 27, 2006, 7:30 p.m. at St. James Church, 29 East Paul Avenue, Trenton, New Jersey.
