I recently asked that all former J&L Specialty Steel employee's contact Met Life to verify that they are
in their system, and to verify their years of service. In order for me to dispute any issues, you will need
to give the operator at the Met Life call center your verbal consent authorizing the release of information
to Cort Rowse local Union Benefits Coordinator. If you have already called and have an issue, you need to call
back and authorize Met Life to release your information. I can be reached at usw1212cort@comcast.net or 1-330-831-8239.
Thanks,
Cort

Retroactive Stop-Loss Pay Going Unclaimed: The White House along with DOD and VA are trying to reach tens of thousands of former servicemen and women who were Stop-Lossed between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009. The government owes them $500 for every month they were involuntarily extended beyond their normal separation date. The only requirement is the veterans must apply for the money before Dec. 3, 2010. Thousands have already applied and received an average payout of nearly $4,000. For more information or to apply for the Stop-Loss reimbursement, go to www.defense.gov/stoploss.

It has come to my attention that some Members are incurring problems with their sub make up and waiting week payments.
I have been in contact with the Company and as a resolution to this problem effective today8/23/10 any time you receive
an Unemployment Determination you will bring it to the Union Hall for me to fax this information to the Company.
This will insure a smooth transaction. Hopefully with full employment this problem will be eliminated.

Midland Steelworkers union hall a beloved memory By Karen Kadilak,
FOR THE TRIBUNE-REVIEW
Thursday, September 2, 2010
Tucked in a corner storefront on Midland Avenue in the heart of Midland in Beaver County sits the headquarters of United Steelworkers District 10 Local 1212.
The union has been leasing the 1,200-square-foot office, at 703 Midland Ave., since September from the PA Cyber Charter School. Union and school officials plan to meet soon to discuss renewing the lease.
Sporting a large USW insignia in front, the quarters are not nearly as imposing as the three-story, marble-fronted hall the local owned and occupied a block away for more than 50 years.
Facing dwindling membership, the local sold the hall in 2005 to PA Cyber the largest cyber charter in the state and a major property owner in Midland. After selling the property, the local rented space in the hall for four years until the school decided to take over the entire building a year ago, forcing Local 1212 to find new space.
The school has embarked on a major renovation project, featuring changes to the building's interior and exterior, leaving union members with mixed feelings.
"That hall has a lot of meaning to us," said Tony Tepsic, president of Local 1212. "It was tough to leave, but we're happy that it's being put to use and not torn down."
Local 1212 has 320 members, most of whom are employed at the stainless steel mill Allegheny Ludlum has operated in Midland since 2004. Allegheny Ludlum is the sixth company to own the mill in 29 years.
Tepsic is encouraged that business is improving and Allegheny Ludlum plans to hire new employees at the mill soon.
"Still, things will never be the way they once were," Tepsic said. "We learned a long time ago that we have to adapt in order to survive."
In its heyday, when Crucible Steel Co. of America owned the mill, Local 1212 boasted a membership of several thousand.
"The hall used to hum 40, 50 years ago," Tepsic said. "At one time, there was a 10-person staff; now, I'm the only full-time employee.
"Back then, we needed a lot of space for our membership meetings alone."
PA Cyber Charter provides space in one of its buildings when members of the local meet now.
"The school has been very accommodating," Tepsic said. "Our biggest problem is what to do with all the memorabilia we have accumulated over the years. We have a lot of (photographs) and award plaques in storage that we have to figure out where to display."
According to Gary Hubbard, a United Steel Workers spokesman in Washington, locals across the nation have been downsizing their headquarters.
"The big union halls are a thing of the past," Hubbard said. "A lot of locals are moving to private space."
