Welcome to the United World Sustainability Fund

Jump to Menu

The Objective of the Fund is to:

Contribute to improvements in our species’ ability to live in a sustainable manner through the donation of funds to talented, creative, individuals with an international perspective, facilitating their ability to make change happen.

Arguably the most significant issue facing our species is the imbalance between our resource consumption and the Earth’s ability to generate resources.  Global warming is but the tip of this iceberg we are headed toward.  United World Colleges is uniquely positioned to address this issue because the issue impacts everyone in the world, it is caused by everyone in the world, and the world’s youth will be most impacted.

Progress in addressing an issue requires passion, creativity, perspective, and energy.  Progress also requires funding. The United World Sustainability Grant is intended to provide at least some of the funding.  The fund was originally established with $15,000 and three projects were funded.  One project didn’t work out, so $4,000 is currently available and we are seeking one project to use these funds constructively.

United World Sustainability Fund is available to United World College’s current students and recent graduates.  Awards will be granted both for research endeavors and for practical projects which implement sustainable living practices.

Some examples of potential projects are provided to help explain the fund’s objective:

  • Study of the social, economic, and environmental impacts of implementing a one-child-per-family policy in various cultures. (The fund’s donor is particularly interested in this one)
  • Delivering materials and training to encourage the use of solar ovens in xxx
  • Building and testing a model power generation facility which harnesses tidal energy.

Currently this is a one-time, one-donor, Fund.
