United World Sustainability Fund

Questions and Answers

Q: What can you tell me now about eligibility requirements for the grant? Can students from any of the UW Schools apply?  What is meant by a “recent graduate”?

A     Yes, students and recent graduates from any of the United World Colleges may apply. Recent Graduates are those people who graduated within the last 5 years. As of September 2009 the grant is open to National Committees too.

Q: Will there be a single $15,000 grant, or several smaller ones?

A     This depends on the applications, and the decisions of the UWC Graduates who are awarding the grants.  It could go either way.

Q: What is the process for awarding grants to individuals?

A     Non profit tax law requires that the donor not have a direct say in the allocation of the funds.  Therefore, three UWC graduates will review the applications and award funds.  These graduates could be from any year.  Ideally they would represent a diversity of views.

A     We are anticipating 10 to 20 applications.  The three UWC graduates will read them and score each of the sections.  Then they’d re-read the top 5 and make a decision.

Q: Will the results of any work done through the grant be communicated to a wider audience?

A     This depends on the initiative.  Generally initiatives which are conducting research will have more of a communication component then initiatives which are implementing solutions.

Q: Is the grant intended as an educational process for the recipient(s)?

A     Not really. The grants are for research or execution which furthers sustainable living. It’s likely that the recipients will experience an educational process, but that is a by-product.

A     Note that UWC’s mission statement says that the mission is to further sustainable living, not just to educate students about sustainable living.

Q: Is this a UWC program?

A     No this isn’t currently a UWC program. Who knows, others may want to contribute to it too, and it could take on a life of its own. If it does, then it may make sense for it to be a UWC program.

A     Certainly UWC’s recent decision to include sustainable living in its mission was a key driver in choosing to focus the fund on UWC students and recent graduates.
