Cowboy All-American Quincy
Howe Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA's at Kansas State Invitational
Senior won the
triple jump by nearly six feet over the second-place
finisher with a mark of 52-2.
Jan. 14, 2002, LARAMIE, Wyo. - Wyoming senior triple jumper Quincy Howe
provisionally qualified for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Track and Field
Championships Saturday in the triple jump at the Kansas State
Invitational in Manhattan, Kan.
Howe, who earned All-American honors in 2001, won the triple jump by
nearly six feet over the second-place finisher with a mark of 52-2. He
also placed third in the 60-meter hurdles in a time of 8.61.
As a team the Cowboys placed third out of four teams with 124 points.
Kansas State won the men's team title with 175 points followed by
Emporia State in second with 144. Oklahoma State placed fourth with 63
points to round out the field.
Wyoming managed three other victories on the day in the 200-meter dash,
shot put and 800-meter run. UW newcomer Collin Thomas, a transfer from
Southwestern Christian College, won the 200-meter dash in a time of
22.26 and junior Craig Suter, from Rock Springs, Wyo., took the shot
put with a throw of 54-6 3/4. Suter was the junior college national
champion in the shot last season while at North Idaho College. Junior
transfer Carlon Harrison, also from Southwestern Christian, won the
800-meter run with a time of 1:55.12
"The men weren't very aggressive today," said UW head coach Don Yentes.
"When you're not aggressive good things don't happen for you. We did
get some good performances today but the whole team just wasn't on the
same page. I know we are a better team than what we showed today, we
just need to keep working hard in practice and try to get things going
more positively."
Other top three performances by the Pokes were given by freshman Jeremy
Thompson, who placed third in the 800-meter run (1:58.38), sophomore
Jason Delaney, who finished third in the 3000-meter run (9:08.80),
freshman Bret Zowada, who placed third in the high jump (6-5), freshman
Brandon Inman, who placed second in the long jump (22-5 3/4), sophomore
Brad Vodika, who finished third in the shot put (49-10) and junior John
Griffith, who placed third in the weight throw (55-2 3/4).
The Wyoming men and women will next compete on Saturday, Jan. 19, when
they host the Robert Shine Invite at the War Memorial Fieldhouse. UW
will compete against Mountain West Conference rivals Air Force and
Colorado State. The meet will begin with the field events which start
at 10:30 a.m.
