The University of Wyoming track and field team opened up its 2001-2002 season Friday, December 7th, with its intrasquad meet at War Memorial Fieldhouse in Laramie.

Wyoming head track and field coach Don Yentes said he was very pleased with the teams performance at this point in the season. I think we're off to a good start. Needless to say we ve had a few set back during the Fall with our training, but I thinks as a whole our team is way ahead of where we were last year at this time. Yentes said.

UW received many outstanding performances in its first outing of the season. Returning All-Americans Andrea Batt (sophomore, Huson, Mont.) and Quincy Howe (senior, Perrylands, Trinidad) took first in their respective events with Batt winning the shot put with a throw of 53-0 and Howe winning the triple jump with a leap of 51-10.  Junior Seth Billy (Christ City, Barbados), the 2001 Mountain West Conference Champion in the 400-meter hurdles, won the 400-meter dash with a time of :49.56.

Other first-place finishes for the Pokes were by junior John Griffith in the 35-pound weight throw (59-2), sophomore Collin Thomas in the 55-meter dash (6.32) and 200-meter dash (:22.56), junior Craig Suter in the shot put (55-2), freshman Matt Hudson in the mile (4:38.13), Darren Niedermeyer in the pole vault (14-6) and Hal Bromley in the high jump (6-0).

The Cowgirls first-place showings were by senior Julie Thomas in the 20-pound weight throw (60-3 1/2), sophomore Chan Johnson in the high jump (5-6), senior Enioma Haynes in the long jump (16-5 3/4), junior Kelly Ann Charles in the 55-meter hurdles (8.04), senior Adelaide Harper in the 55-meter dash (7.13), freshman Shawna Smith in the 400-meter dash (:56.18), sophomore LeeAnn Forbes in the 800-meter dash (2:31.61) and senior Fiona Lindo-Jeffrey in the 200-meter dash (:25.64).

Wyoming will officially start its season Jan. 11, 2002, when they compete in the Kansas State Invitational at Manhatten, Kan.
