Story
LARAMIE,
Wyo. - Sophomore's Zach Schaefer and Tanice Barnett both took first place
in their respective events for Wyoming Track and Field at the Husker Invitational
in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday. Schaefer's throw of 61' 1/4" took the crown
in the weight throw while Barnett's time of 2:13.53 was good for first place
in the 800 meters.
"We
had some nice performances today," said UW head track and field coach Don
Yentes. "We had a lot of athletes set personal records in their events
and that is great to see just weeks before the conference meet."
Wyoming
athletes that set personal records were senior Lee Ann Forbes in the 800 meters
(2:19.14), freshman Brian Knight in the 3,000 meters (8:30.98), sophomore
Jennifer Thompson in the 800 meters (10:15.98) sophomore Natalie Kean in the
3,000 meters (10:19.02), and freshman Robert Harris in the 400 meter dash
(49.69).
The
Cowboys were led by the throw crew as four athletes earned team points on
the day. Senior John Griffith finished right behind Schaefer in the weight
throw finishing second (58' 7.25"). Senior Dan Williams and sophomore Brad
Vodicka finished sixth and seventh in the shot put with marks of 54' 5.25"
and 53' 9" respectively.
Senior
Mervin Swaby's mark of 23' 7.5" in the long jump was good enough for second
place for the Pokes. Swaby also finished sixth in the 60 meter dash with a
time of 6.94. Other Cowboy notables were freshman Blake Jackson's fourth place
finish in the triple jump (45' 1"), and sophomore Matt Hudson who finished
seventh in the mile run (4:15.34).
The
Cowgirls set a new school record in the 4x400 meter relay. The tandem of Ingvild
Carstens, Shauna Smith, Kima Wells and Jessica Fox broke the previous record
by half a second with a time of 3:47.11. Wells also took third place in the
200 meter dash (25.08) and fourth place in the 60 meter dash (7.64). Other
Cowgirls that turned in quality performances were junior Crystal Smith who
took second in the weight throw (61' 1.5"), freshman Melissa Vallejos' fourth
place performance in the weight throw (56'.5"), and junior Andrea Batt who
earned a second place finish in the shot put (50' 10").
"We
need to get focussed for the conference meet in two weeks," added Yentes.
"We made some nice strides today, but we need everyone to step it up if we
want to finish the indoor season strong."
The
Cowboys and Cowgirls will next compete at the Wyoming Open on Feb. 21st in
Laramie, Wyo., in the War Memorial Fieldhouse.

About
the Bob Devaney Sports Center
Now in its
26th season, the Bob Devaney Sports Center Track has cemented its reputation
as one of the finest track and field facilities in the world. Named after
longtime NU Athletic Director and football coach, the Devaney Center boasts
an impressive array of training, competitive, and spectator amenities, highlighted
by a new hydraulic-banked track.
Manufactured by Mondo USA, the new track was part of a $2.979 million
renovation. Hawkins Construction of Omaha was the contractor in charge of
the project, which was finished 44 days ahead of schedule.
One of three hydraulic-banked tracks in the nation and one of seven in
the world, NU's 200-meter track has the largest radius (67 feet) of any indoor-banked
track in the world. The banks and all the running surfaces rest on a sleeper
system, which is made of both steel (banks) and wood (straightaways) frames.
The new Mondo surface replaces a six-lane 200-meter oval track with an
eight-lane straightaway and Versaturf 360 surface.
The Devaney Center accommodates up to 5,000 spectators for all track and
field events. Other improvements include the installation of a new, state-of-the-art
scoreboard in 1995. The scoreboard allows fans to read competitors marks
almost instantly with the aid of NU's FinishLynx timing system.
The Devaney Sports Center has played host to a number of the country's
premiere track and field events, having hosted the final Big Eight Indoor
Championships in 1996 and the first-ever Big 12 meet in 1997. Nebraska will
also play host to the Big 12 Indoor Track Championships for the third consecutive
year in 2003.
