Wyoming Track Teams Competes in Final Meet Before

Laramie, Wyo. (February 21, 2003) -- University of Wyoming track and field teams competed in their final meet before heading to the Mountain West Conference Championships next weekend. The Cowboys and Cowgirls played host to Chadron State, Colorado State and the Bear Track Club in a none scoring meet Friday at the War Memorial Fieldhouse.
UW athletes took first place in thirteen events on the day and many athletes recorded personal best performances.
Three Cowboys took home the top spot in their respective events including senior Mervin Swaby who was a triple winner. Swaby took first place in the long jump with a season best jump of 24’ 7 1/4”, also recording the best Mountain West long jump mark on the season. His leap of 49’ 10” was also took the crown in the jump, which again was a season best mark for the Pokes. Swaby completed the hat trick with a first place finish in the 55 meter dash with a time of 6.45. Other Cowboys to take home first place honors were freshman Jeremiah Johnson in the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.65, and freshman Freeman Charles’ time of 51.56 was the top time in the 400 meter dash.
The Cowboy throw crew also turned in some great marks Friday. Sophomore Zack Shaefer recorded a season best mark in the weight throw with a toss of 62’ 8”. Senior Dan Williams also improved his season best mark in the event for the season throwing to a distance of 61’ 11 3/4”. In the shot put sophomore Brad Vodika set a personal record with mark of 53’ 11 3/4”.
Sophomore Courtney Schlegel took first place in the long jump with a leap of 17’ 5 1/4”. The jump is a personal best and the second best jump on the team this season. Schlegel also took first place in the triple jump, setting another personal record with a mark of 37’ 11 1/2”.
In the pole vault freshman Kaela Thayer vaulted a personal best 10’ 11 1/2” taking the top spot. Thayer’s vault is also the best mark by a Cowgirl this season. Junior high jumper Chauna Johnson took the top spot in her event clearing the bar at 5’ 3 3/4”. Other Cowgirls that turned in solid field event performances were junior Andrea Batt who took second in the shot put with a mark of 51’ 5”, and senior Crystal Smith taking second in the weight throw with a throw of 63’ 7 1/2”, which is the eleventh best mark in the nation.
On the track, four Cowgirls turned in first place performances in their events. Sophomore Shauna Smith recorded a season best time in the 55 meter hurdles with an 7.95. Junior Kima Wells improved her time in the 55 meter dash with a 7.00, which is currently the fastest time in the Mountain West Conference. Sophomore Ashley Mecham took the top spot in the 800 meters with a personal best time of 2:24.65, and freshman Ingvild Carstens won the 200 meter dash with a time of 26.24.
“We had some great performances today,” said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. “A lot of kids came out here today and stepped it up, but they need to do the same thing next weekend because that is when it counts.”
The Cowgirls and Cowboys will next travel to the Air Force Academy for the MWC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 27-Mar. 1. Last season the UW men placed fourth and the women placed third at the indoor championships.
