12, 2003 - Ogden,
Utah - The University of Wyoming men's and women's track and field
teams
competed at the Wildcat Invite on the campus of Weber State University
on
Saturday. The Cowboys and Cowgirls did not send their full squads, but
the
athletes that did participate performed very well.
Seniors
Mervin Swaby and Quincy Howe highlighted the Cowboys as they took first
place
in their events. Swaby grabbed the top spot in the long jump with a
leap
of 24' 4", he also took third place in the 100 meter dash with a time
of
10.68 seconds. Howe won the triple jump crown with a mark of 51' 1".
Senior
thrower John Griffith also performed well. Griffith took third place in
the hammer throw, with a toss of 179' 11", and the shot put, with a
mark of
51' 9". Other Cowboys that put up good marks were freshman Jeremiah
Johnson
who earned second place in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.50
seconds,
freshman Robert Harris who took fourth place in the 400 meter dash with
a
time of 49.49 seconds and the Cowboy 4x400 relay team that finished
with
a time of 3:18.30 seconds for third place.
Sophomore
Shauna Smith qualifed for the NCAA Regional meet with her first place
finish
time of 13.81 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles for the Cowgirls. Smith
also
qualified for the NCAA's in the 400 meter hurdles with her time of
1:00.89
seconds. Fellow sophomore Jessica Fox took first place in the 200 meter
dash
for the UW women with a time of 23.62 seconds. Another Cowgirls that
performed
well was senior Adelaide Harper who took third place in the 100 meter
dash
with a time of 11.95 seconds. Both of the Cowgirl relay teams turned
heads
on Saturday. The 4x100 relay team raced to first place with a time of
46.39
seconds, third fastest in UW history, while the 4x400 relay team took
second
place with a time of 3:57.24 seconds.
"We
had
a very nice meet," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "The
wind
made it tough for some of our athletes, but we still competed very
well.
It was good to see our kids perform well against this competition this
late
in the season."
The
Cowboys
and Cowgirls will send both full squads next weekend to the Mount Sac
Relays
April 17-19 in Walnut, Calif.
