UW Track & Field Completes
Competition at Mount Sac Relays
Jessica Fox takes 1st in 400 meter dash.
April 20, 2003 - LARAMIE, Wyo. - A small group of athletes from
University of Wyoming Track and Field program wrapped up competition at
the Mount Sac Relays in Walnut, Calif. on Saturday. The meet is one of
the biggest of the outdoor season and features the top schools and
athletes from around the country.
Highlighting Wyoming was sophomore Jessica Fox who broke her two-week
old school record in the 400 meter dash by taking first place with a
time of 52.30 seconds. The Burns, Wyo. native competed in the Olympic
Development division in the event and her time is the second fastest in
Mountain West Conference history while currently being the third best
time in the nation.
Senior Adelaide Harper ran a career second best time of 24.25 in the
200 meter dash to finish 14th. Senior Kim Demers ran an NCAA Regional
qualifying time of 1:01.00 in the 400 meter hurdles to place 20th.
Other Cowgirl notables were freshman Kaylyn Doyle placing 22nd in the
shot put (44' 7") and senior Andrea Batt taking 25th in the shot put
(44' 2.75").
Senior long jumper Mervin Swaby shined for the Cowboys taking sixth
place in his event with a mark of 23' 10". Freshman Jeremiah Johnson
ran a career second best time in the 800 meters, 1:51.52 seconds, to
place 25th in the event. In the 400 meter dash, senior Cody Millemon
and freshman Robert Harris finished 19th and 26th with times of 48.26
seconds and 49.03 seconds, respectively. Sophomore Brad Vodicka
recorded the fourth best throw in his flight of the shot put, 53'
11.75", to finish 19th overall, and senior Quincy Howe finished 12th in
the Invite competition of the triple jump with at leap of 50' 9.5".
"I think we had a mix of good with the bad today," said UW head track
and field coach Don Yentes. "We had some nice performances overall and
I am happy how we ended up. We are now on the down side of our season
and hopefully we will keep cranking it up."
The UW track and field teams will next compete at the Glenn Morris
Decathlon and Jack Christensen Invite in Fort Collins, Colo. April
24-26.

UW Athletes Post Impressive Marks at
Pomona Pitzer Invite
Kelly Ann Charles qualified for the NCAA Regional
in the 100 meter hurdles.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - Athletes from the University of
Wyoming track and field team's spilt up into three groups this weekend
to
compete in three different meets; CSU Open in Fort Collins, Mt. Sac
Relays
in Walnut, Calif. and the Pomona Pitzer Invite in Claremont, Calif. At
the
Pomona-Pitzer Invite three UW competitors set personal career records.
Senior Kelly Ann
Charles shined for the Cowgirls as she qualified for the
NCAA Regional in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 14.10 seconds.
The
time was good enough for seventh place and was a personal record for
Charles. In the javelin, senior Andrea Batt finished in the Top 10 with
a
mark of 133' 4". Sophomore Courtney Schlegel recorded an impressive
mark of
36' 11" in the triple jump to finish 11th in the event. Freshman
Jennifer
Thompson turned in a personal season best in the 1500 meter run with a
time
of 17:49.79, good enough for 13th place.
For the Cowboys,
sophomore Brad Vodicka took home fifth place in the shot
put with a career best mark of 53' 8.5". In the 5000 meter run,
freshman
Micheal Huntington ran a time of 14:57.35 to earn seventh place, while
teammate Matt Hudson ran a career
best 3:56.99 in the 1500 meters.
"They turned in some
great performances," said UW head track and field
coach Don Yentes. "It is always great to see athletes set personal
records
and qualify for the NCAA meet. Hopefully, the improvements we are
making
will continue."
