2, 2003 -- Laramie Wyo. --
A small contingent of University of Wyoming track and field athletes
competed at the Colorado University Twilight Invitational Thursday in
Boulder, Colo. The UW men captured third place with 87 points, while
the women earned third place as well with 147 points. Freshman
Blake Jackson jumped to a first place finish in the triple jump for the
Cowboys.
Jackson's mark of 48' .75" is a personal record for the Cheyenne, Wyo.
native.
In the shot put UW took a 2nd-3rd-4th place sweep. Brad Vodicka took
second
for the Pokes with a mark of 52' 11". John Griffith followed in third
place
with his put of 52' 10", and Tyg Long took fourth with his distance of
51'
11.25". Griffith also placed third in the hammer throw with an NCAA
Regional
Qualifying mark of 185' 6".
Freshman
Robert Harris raced to a second place finish in the 200 meter dash with
a
time of 22.20. Sophomore Eric Suter threw a distance of 152' 3" in the
javelin
to earn a third place finish. In the 800 meter run sophomore Jeremy
Thompson
finished fourth with a season best time of 1:55.53, and freshman
Tom
Hall recorded a season best mark in the high jump clearing a height of
6'
4".
"Overall
it was a good day for us," said UW assistant track and field coach Paul
Barrett.
"The kids are putting up some great marks and times. We are in the
final
stretch of the season and it is good to see our athletes peaking at the
right
time."
Junior
Andrea
Batt improved her season marks in the shot put and discus throw. Batt's
mark
of 48' 3.25" in the shot put and 158' 2" in the discus qualifies her
for
the NCAA Regional meet in both events. Kaylyn Doyle took second place
in
the shot put with a season best mark of 46' 10", the distance also
qualifies
her for the NCAA Regional.
Freshman
Ingvild Carstens took first place in the 100 meter dash with a personal
best
time of 12.64. Carstens also finished second in the 400 meter hurdles
with
a season best time of 1:03.36. Sophomore Ashley Mecham's 3000 meter
time
of 10:41.47 was good for a second place finish. The Cowgirls had great
third
place performances by Cheryl Collen in the 200 meter dash (26.34), Erin
Knecht
in the 400 meter dash (58.79), Jennifer Vessa in the 1500 meter run
(4:54.28),
Lisa Throener in the high jump (5' 1.75"), Amber Perryman in the long
jump
(16' 6") and Courtney Schlegel in the triple jump (36' 5").
The
Cowboys
and Cowgirls will spilt up their squads this weekend to compete at two
different
meets. One group will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Jesse Owens
Classic,
and the other squad will compete at the UNC Cowtown Classic in Greeley,
Colo.
