Jeremiah Johnson Races to First Place at Jesse Owens Invite

Columbus, Ohio. (May 2, 2003)-- Several University of Wyoming track and field athletes competed on the first day of action at the Jesse Owens Classic Friday on the campus of Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio. The meet is named after the legendary Olympic and Ohio State athlete, and features top collegiate track and field teams from across the country
Freshman Jeremiah Johnson stole the show by taking first place in the 800 meter run. The Laramie, Wyo. native crossed the finish line in 1:52.58, surpassing his competition by over half -second. Senior Quincy Howe leaped his way to a second place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 50’ 4.5”. In the 5,000 meter run freshman Brian Knight posted a Cowboy season best and personal best time of 14:32.82 to finish fifth. Freshman Michael Huntington also ran a personal best time in the event, 15:18.91, finishing 23rd. Other Cowboy’s that ran in the meet were freshman Matt Hudson who finished ninth in the 1500 meter run with a time 4:02.39 and senior Mervin Swaby who ran a Cowboy season best time of 10.68 in the 100 meter dash to place eighth.
Wyoming’s  Jennifer Thompson and Natalie Kean were the only Cowgirls to compete on Friday. The two sophomore’s both set personal records in the 5,000 meter run. Thompson ran a time of 17:42.86, which is a Cowgirl season best time in the event. Kean finished 12th with a time of 18:11.90.
“We traveled 15 hours to get here and our kids ran today as if they had been here for a week,” said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. “Our distance runners did an outstanding job. Tomorrow some of our athletes will be competing in the Invitational division of the meet, which is the highest division. Our kids have to step it up  because they will be seeing some very fast athletes tomorrow.”
UW concludes its competition at the Jesse Owens Classic tomorrow, while another group of Cowboy and Cowgirl track and field athletes will be competing at the UNC Cowtown Classic in Greeley, Colo.

Editor's note, 1500m: Matthew Hudson was running with the lead pack when he said he heard something pop in his previously injured foot toward the end of the second lap. He somehow finished the race and then collapsed. He was taken to the meet doctor who indicated that Matthew had finally torn the planter fascia tendon in his foot.
