(October 4, 2003) -- The University of
Wyoming cross country teams competed at the Pre-MWC
Championship meet Saturday in San Diego, Calif. The Cowboy
harriers captured second place with 49 points while the
Cowgirls placed third with 81 points.
The pre-MWC meet allows competitors to get used
to the
course which they will also run on Nov. 1, when San Diego
State hosts the MWC championship meet for the first time in
the conference's five-year history.
Leading the Cowboys was sophomore Brian Knight who
beat all
competitors in the 8-kilometer race with a time of 26:09.
Knight's first place finish is the first of his Cowboy
career. Freshman Jason Sanders trailed Knight to finish
ninth with a time of 26:57. Sophomore Ragen Driver set a
personal best mark with an 11th place finish and a time of
27:08. Other UW runners that helped lead the Pokes to their
best finish of the season was senior Jason Delaney (13th
place, 27:14), junior Jeremy Thompson
(16th place, 27:52)
and sophomore Brian Harnish (17th place, 28:02).
Five Cowgirls finished in the top 20 in the
women's
6-kilometer race. Pacing the Cowgirls was junior Natalie Kean who
finished 11th overall with a time of 23:22.
Sophomore Tanice Barnett crossed the finish line in 23:33 to
finish 13th. Sophomore Emerald Reid, junior Ashley Pederson
and sophomore Christine Michel finished in 18th (24:03),
19th (24:03) and 20th (24:05), respectively. Junior Rachel
Stacy bettered her season best time in the 6k by ten seconds
with her 24:18 performance which placed her 23rd. Sophomores
Kristen Brauneis and Elena Helmerick rounded out the
Cowgirls finishing 27th (24:59) and 34th (25:51).
Another group of Cowgirl runners competed at the
Rocky
Mountain Shootout in Boulder, Colo. on Saturday. Wyoming
finished third out of three teams in the Division I
category. Freshman Lauren Tonoli finished 11th in the
6-kilometer race with a time of 24:38 to pace the Cowgirl
squad. Other UW runners that competed was sophomore Maggie
Diller (13th, 24:51), senior Jennifer Mansell (14th, 24:52),
sophomore Shannon Obermire (17th, 25:35), junior Jessica
Johnson (19th, 26:33) and sophomore Amber Barlow (20th,
27:07).
The Cowboy and Cowgirl harriers will next
compete at the
Dan Libera Memorial on Oct. 11 in Greeley, Colo.
