Story

March 6, 2004 - Laramie, Wyo. - Sophomore Jeremiah Johnson and the Cowgirl 4x400 meter relay team shattered Wyoming records Saturday at the Iowa State Last Chance meet in Ames, Iowa.

Johnson took first place in his heat of the men's 800 meter dash with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 1:48.30. His time also sets a new UW school record in the event and is the fastest time in Mountain West Conference history.

The Cowgirl relay team of Jessica Fox, Amanda Hopper, Kima Wells and Shauna Smith raced to a first place finish with an unbelievable time of 3:31.87 to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships. Their time also shatters the team's previous school record of 3:41.25 which they set this January. The time currently ranks as the fourth fastest in the nation and it also is the best time in the history of the MWC.

"Jeremiah ran a great race in a very slow heat," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "He really stepped it up and posted a great time. He is just a sophomore and on his way to the NCAA's."

"What our relay team did today was unreal. They shattered our school and conference record. I don't think we will ever have a group of girls like this again. All of them are Wyoming natives and they have told me that they think they can even be faster. That really goes to show you their work ethic and how much desire they have for this. It really is something else."

The 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships are slated for March 14-15 in Fayetteville, Ark.
