Batt Places Second In The Discus Throw At The Mount SAC Relays

Walnut, Calif. (April 18, 2004) -- University of Wyoming track and field athletes completed their second day of competition Saturday at the 2004 Mount San Antonio College Relays. The Mount SAC Relays is one of the best track and field meets of the outdoor season and features top collegiate programs from the Big 12, Big Sky, Mountain West, Southeast, Pac-10 and West Coast conferences.  Junior Zack Schaefer, a native of Battle Ground, Wash., was the Cowboy top placer on Saturday.  Schaefer's distance of 204' 5" in the men's hammer throw was good enough for sixth place out of 19 competitors.  Senior Andrea Batt, from Six Mile, Mont., highlighted the Cowgirls on Saturday. Batt placed second out of 22 competitors in the women's discus throw. Her distance of 160' 4" is an NCAA Regional qualifying mark and is her best distance of the season.  Kima Wells, a senior from Alpine, Wyo., won her heat of the women's 400 meter dash. Wells crossed the finish line in 54.81 seconds, a season's best time, and claimed fifth place overall in the timed section final.

Cowboy Matt Hudson, sophomore from Signal Mountain, Tenn., recorded a new career best time in the 1,500 meter run. Hudson finished 80th out of 130 runners with a time of 3:53.24.

Late on Friday, three Cowgirls, all natives of Cheyenne, Wyo., ran to personal best times in the women's 5,000 meter race. Sophomore Jennifer Thompson finished with the third best time in Cowgirl history, 16:59.77, to place 27th. Junior Natalie Kean and sophomore Emerald Reid finished 40th and 41st, respectively, with times of 17:19.88 and 17:20.15.

"Those three girls (Thompson, Kean and Reid) raced their hearts out," said UW head track and field coach Don Yentes. "They competed against a stacked field of All-Americans and other great athletes. They stepped up."
"Saturday was up and down," added Yentes. "We are making progress, but Sunday will be a big challenge for some of our kids and we will see where we are as a team."

Editor's notes - Around the Mountain West Conference and Colorado

800m -- An unusual waterfall start made for some crowded starts in all heats as runners struggled for the inside lane by the first curve.  Jeremiah Johnson was shoved, but no one was disqualified!?  Jason Zichterman of Colorado edged out Bryant Beven in 1:50.94 to 1:51.07.  Jered Peacock of the Colorado School of Mines is nursing a ham string pull and finished 47th in 1:57.36.  Chris Gausphole (Air Force) finished at 2:00.21.  Adam Arellano and Nick Lara (Adams State) also ran.

1500m -- Nate Robison of BYU won the University/Open section in 3:40.89 edging out Sean Jefferson, of Indiana who ran in a different heat, by one hundredth of a second.  Dathan Ritzenhiem (Colorado) was 11th in 3:43 while team mates Stephen Pifer and Jered Scott ran 3:50 and 3:52 for 54th and 76th.  Brian Lyndsey (BYU); Franz, Patterson and Storbeck (Air Force);  Aden, Martinez and Merrick (Adams); and Banks (Western) also ran.

3000m Steeple Chase -- Matt Adams of BYU finished 9th in 8:46.  McAdams and Evanson also ran.

5000m -- Matt Gonzales of New Mexico won the University/Open event with a time of 13:44 to 13:45 over Ryan Hall of Stanford.  Bret Schoolmiester of Colorado was 4th in 13.50.  Clarke, Martinez, and Flaherty (New Mexico), Nelson (Colorado) and Banks (Western) also ran.
