Cowgirls Take Second, Cowboys Fourth At
Jack Christiansen Invite

Ft. Collins, Colo.--
The University of Wyoming track and field program sent two depleted
squads to the cold (60 degrees F) and windy (late in the day) Jack
Christiansen Invite, Saturday in Fort Collins, Colo. The Cowboys ended the meet
in fourth place with 72 points, behind CSU, 203 points, Air Force, 128
points and Colorado, 104 points.
Cowboy sprinter Dwight Neptune continued
to show his improvement this weekend. The freshman from Gaspirillo,
Trinidad, finished second in the men's 100 meter dash with a time of
10.93.
In the 1,500 meter run, sophomore Matt
Hudson, a native of Signal Mountain, Tenn., posted an impressive time
for the second straight meet. He took the runner-up spot with a
time of 3:55.02, his second best time of the season.
Three Cowboys posted
career best times in the 400 meter dash. Sophomore Jeremiah Johnson, from Laramie,
Wyo., finished fourth with a personal best time of 47.98. Robert
Harris, a sophomore from St. Ann, Jamaica, placed fifth with a career
time of 48.24, and freshman Dominic Baysinger, a native of Rock
Springs, Wyo., also finished with personal best time, 48.71, to finish
in sixth.
The
Cowgirls, without four
key members who competed at the Drake Relays, took an impressive second
place with 129 team points. Colorado State took the women's team title
with 226 points.
Several Cowgirls
finished in the
top three of their respective events on Saturday. Sophomore transfer
Ainsley Thraikill, from Laramie, Wyo., finished in first place in the
women's 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:02.70, her second best time
of the season. She also placed third in the 100 meter hurdles, clocking
in at 14.89 seconds.
Sophomore Tanice
Barnett, from St.
Catherine, Jamaica, posted the second best time in the women's 800
meter run with a season best time of 2:11.86. CSU's Katie Yemm took the
top spot with a time of 2:10.52.
Wyoming took the second
and third
place spots in the women's pole vault. Sophomore Lauri Smith, a native
of Springcreek, Nev., cleared a career high 11' 3/4" to finish in
second place, while senior Stephanie Anderson, a Cheyenne, Wyo.,
native, also cleared 11' 3/4", but she do it in more attempts and
placed third.
Senior Andrea Batt,
from Six Mile,
Mont., took home third place honors in the women's discuss throw. Her
distance of 162' 7" is a season best performance, and is an NCAA
Regional qualifying mark. Batt also finished fourth in the hammer throw
with a mark of 177' 11", also a season's best distance and a NCAA
Regional performance.
Other great
performances for the
Cowgirls included Janine Braithwaite's third place finish in the long
jump (16' 7 3/4") and junior Mellisa Vallejos' fifth place finish in
the hammer throw with a career best mark of 173' 5".
The Cowgirls and
Cowboys will be back in action next weekend, May 1st, when the travel
to Albuquerque, N.M., to compete in the Lobo Invitational.
Zowada
Wins Glenn Morris Decathlon, Cowgirl Leah Burke places fourth.
April 26, 2004 -- Ft. Collins, Colo. - Junior Bret Zowada
took first place at the Glenn Morris Heptahtlon/Decathlon meet, scoring
6,259 points Monday afternoon in Ft. Collins, Colo. Zowada, a native of
Lusk, Wyo., took the top spot in four of the ten events, and never
finished below third in an event during the two-days of competition.
Wyoming sophomore Eric Suter finished fourth with 5,701 points.
Zowada closed out
Monday's competition by clearing a career high 12' 3 1/4" in the pole
vault to take the top spot in the event. He also posted a personal best
distance in the javelin throw with a mark of 157' 11", also the top
performance in the competition.
Cowgirl Leah Burke, a
sophomore from Cheyenne, Wyo., placed fourth overall in the women's
heptathlon. Her best performance was a time of 27.2 in the 200 meter
dash, ranking fourth.
The Wyoming track &
field teams will be in Albuquerque on Saturday for the Modrall Sperling
Don Kirby Invitational.
Results have not been posted by host Colorado State University.
