Wyoming Track and Field Takes All-MWC
Honors in 11 Events.

- The University of Wyoming track and field program closed the 2004
outdoor season with a fourth place finish on the women's side and a
fifth place finish for the men at the Mountain West Conference
Championships in Las Vegas, Nev.
A pair of Cowboys came home with conference championships in junior
Zack Schaefer and sophomore Jeremiah Johnson. Schaefer won the hammer
throw with a throw of 213 feet 10 inches and was awarded the
co-outstanding male performance of the championships. Johnson claimed
the 800 meter run championship with a time of 1:48.80.
The Cowboy 4x400 relay team of freshman Dominic Baysinger and
sophomores Johnson, Robert Harris and Jermaine Kelly placed second in
the event
with a time of 3:11.32. The 4x100 relay team of junior Bret Zowada,
freshmen Dwight Neptune and Adam Kelly and Harris ran to a third place
time of 40.82.
In Friday's high jump competition, freshmen Phillip Thomas and Jared
Grant finished in second and third place with respective heights of 6
feet 7 inches.
The
Cowgirls
championship was highlighted by the first MWC relay title in UW
history. The 4x400 team of freshman Amanda Hopper, senior Kima Wells
and juniors Tanice Barnett and Jessica Fox raced to a first place time
of 3:41.07. The 4x100 relay team of junior Shauna Smith, Wells, Hopper
and Fox placed second with a time of 44.63.
Individually, Fox led the way for the Cowgirls racing to second place
finishes in both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. She ran respective times
of 23.70 and 52.92 in the events. Junior Tanice Barnett placed second
in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.39. Smith placed second in the
100 meter hurdles in a time of 13.56.
"The kids competed really hard," said UW track and field coach Don
Yentes. "We had some really good things happen and had some things that
didn't go as well as we had hoped."
