Division I Outdoor Track
Championships: [ day 1 | day 2 | day 3 | day 4 ] BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Nasty weather disrupted the opening day of the NCAA track and field championships on Wednesday. Fans and competitors were evacuated from Mike A. Myers Stadium three times because of lightning nearby, and a constant - often heavy - rain drenched the track and those trying to compete there. "The No. 1 thing is the safety of everybody, fans and student-athletes," NCAA spokesman Mark Bedics said. "In this situation, rain is not going to hurt anybody. It's slippery but everybody will be on the same playing field. The situation was because of the lightning." Through the first five hours of the meet, only the preliminaries in the women's 400-meter relay were completed. LSU and host Texas - two of the teams expected to battle for the team championship - won their heats. But the third would-be contender, UCLA, sustained a major setback when it failed to make it to the finals. LSU had the fastest time among the qualifiers at 43.04 seconds. Texas was second-fastest at 43.41. TCU edged the Bruins for the ninth and last berth in Saturday's finals by six-thousandths of a second - 44.503 to 44.509. UCLA had the third-fastest time of all the teams at 43.43 seconds. The few fans who braved the rain were evacuated from the metal grandstands after lightning struck nearby early in the afternoon. They weren't allowed back for more than an hour. Competition finally resumed after a delay of more than two hours, but just 30 minutes later, the threat of lightning emptied the stadium again. Fans were just trickling back in after a short delay when lightning flashed close by and the metal stands were ordered cleared again. "I feel bad for the folks here at Texas because they can't do anything about it," Washington State coach Rick Sloan said. "When the weather hits, that's the only thing you can't control in a meet like this. Unfortunately, it's the thing that everybody remembers." A total of 1,123 athletes qualified for the meet. Most of them advanced through regional competition, a format adopted by the NCAA last year despite opposition from most major-college coaches. Drier weather was forecast on Thursday, when the first finals are scheduled - the men's and women's long jump and the men's and women's 10,000 meters. The meet continues through Saturday. 2004 Division I Outdoor Track Championships: Day 2 Results By BOB BAUM AP Sports Writer AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Alistair Cragg wrapped up his magnificent Arkansas career Thursday night by winning the 10,000 meters at the NCAA track and field championships, his seventh collegiate title. Cragg pulled away from Robert Cheseret of Arizona in the final 600 meters, ending any doubt with a 60.7-second final lap, to win in 29 minutes, 22.43 seconds. Cheseret was second at 29:26.51. Cragg took the lead for good with 12 laps to go in the 25-lap race, the final event of day two at the championships, being held at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the Texas campus. The senior from South Africa, who will compete for Ireland in the Olympics, would have been the favorite to win the 5,000 as well. He had by far the best time of any collegiate runner in the event, but was disqualified from the NCAA meet in that event after skipping the race at the Mideast Regional with a sore calf. Cragg had been told by a meet official that he would be allowed in the NCAA championships despite the injury, but the NCAA ruled otherwise. So the 10,000 was his farewell to a college career that saw him win five titles indoors and two outdoors. "It's a nice way to finish it off," Cragg said. "I was scared I wasn't going to put the icing on the cake. I was just praying I wouldn't dilute everything I've done." Cragg won the NCAA 5,000 outdoors last year, and probably could have won the 10,000 too. But as he and teammate Dan Lincoln were about to cross the finish line together, arm in arm, Cragg slowed slightly, allowing the senior Lincoln to finish first. In other events Thursday, John Moffitt of LSU won the long jump on his final attempt, with a leap of 27 feet, 6 3/4 inches. Tony Allmond of South Carolina had taken the lead in his final jump, but finished second at 27-4 3/4. Moffit's mark was the best at the NCAA meet since Erick Walter of Arkansas jumped 28 feet in 1993. Defending champion Leevan Sands of Auburn fouled twice and failed to make the finals with a jump of 25 feet. "I knew I could do it and had it in me to win," Moffitt said. "I wanted to keep myself calm and not overdo it, so I took a deep breath and gave it my all." Moffitt shrugged off problems with a sore groin and ankle. "I didn't really feel it because I was too amped up,"' he said. Jacquelyn Johnson of Arizona State used a burst of energy down the stretch of the 800 meters to become the first freshman to win the heptathlon since Sheila Tarr of UNLV in 1984. The 19-year-old from Yuma, Ariz., edged defending champion Hyleas Fountain, who held a slim lead going into the 800, the last of the heptathlon's seven events. "She's awesome," Fountain said. "She's going to be doing some great things. People are going to have to watch out for her." Johnson finished with 5,807 points, 204 more than her previous best. She had personal bests in the 100-meter hurdles, javelin and 800. Fountain, bothered by a sore right hamstring, was second with 5,785. The freshman's winning surge began as she completed her final turn. "To tell you the truth, I didn't know how far she was behind me," Johnson said, "but I just knew I had to go, so I just went. I got that last bit of energy. I was like 'I'm almost done. Let's just get out there. You're gonna hurt, so just hurt.'" Fountain came back to win the long jump with a wind-aided 21-8 1/4. "I have a hurt leg right now but I had to suck it up, shake it off and give everything I had and it turned out to be enough to win," she said. Alicia Craig of Stanford defended her title in the women's 10,000, winning in 33:58.27. After rain and lightning wiped out most of Wednesday's schedule, Thursday's competition came under mostly clear skies. The schedule was shortened and some qualifying heats were eliminated. In the women's 100-meter preliminaries, Lauryn Williams of Miami won her heat in a wind-aided 10.94 seconds, the fastest time under any conditions in the world this year. "It was way beyond what I expected," Williams said. "I was really, really nervous. I was kind of disappointed after not getting to run yesterday. I woke up this morning kind of achy. ... But I still had it today." In the men's 100, Marc Burns of Auburn led all qualifiers with a wind-aided 9.99 seconds. Tyson Gay of Arkansas won his heat in a wind-aided 10.01, then came back to lead qualifiers in the 200 at 20.09 seconds. The Arkansas men, favored to defend their team championship, had a minor setback when Omar Brown injured his hamstring and didn't finish the 200-meter preliminaries. Brown had been expected to anchor the Razorbacks' 400-meter relay team. "Everything can't always go perfect," Arkansas coach John McDonnell said. "We have 15 people. Something has to go wrong." Evelyn Dwyer of Texas failed to finish her heat in the 800 meters, collapsing on the infield. She was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released. The NCAA games committee rejected an appeal to the disqualification of the Texas women's 400-meter relay team for using an improper exchange zone marker while winning its qualifying heat on Wednesday. LSU head coach Pat Henry and sprints coach Dennis Shaver filed the protest that led to the disqualification. Texas, LSU and UCLA were the pre-meet picks to fight it out for the women's team title. With Texas out, UCLA moved on to the finals. Before the ruling, the Bruins had missed the finals by six-thousandths of a second. "We were a little disappointed when we heard," said Texas' Sanya Richards. "But I think it's given our team more motivation to come back and compete our best. We still think the title can be ours if we compete well."
