This page details some of the work I did for
COMPUTOONS® for Sierra\Dynamix's 3D game, TrainTown!. COMPUTOONS® was sub-contracted by
Dynamix to create about a jillion 3D train set models for the game. (well, maybe a half a
jillion) Along with Dennis Clevenger, I built 3D models of all sorts of model train
buildings.
Once again, 3D STUDIO MAX was the software of
choice, along with Adobe Photoshop for generating maps and graphics.
Coal Mining Facility for TrainTown. If you look closely at the
larger .jpg you can just make out the name "Colburn Mining Company". This
is an in-reference to a friend of mine who is a long time train hobbyist. Here's a
close-up of the upper tower.
Rock Quarry
model. Actually it's a group of models making one facility. Real quarries have
a wider variety of colors in the buildings, but since the models were to appear part of a
table top 'model', they were easier to distinguish from other set pieces if they were
somewhat monochromatic.
Meat packing
plant. This model originally had a more photorealistic brick texture, but as with
the Quarry and other models, it had to stand out against the backgrounds they would later
be added to. In fact this image is still a bit larger than what you would see in the
game.
Petrol Station.
Another model that bares the name of a friend. "Walker Petrolium" is a reference
to his lifelong work with cars. And again, the original color was not lime green.
I would have prefered worn barn-red boards or something along those lines, but you
already know what the reasons are.
Sawmill complex. This model
is fairly accurate. Not the layout, but the design of the individual buildings. Since I
live in Oregon, it wasn't to tough to take a short trip to a local mill to take reference
photos.
Power
plant sub-station. I based this model on an actual sub-station less than a mile from my
home.
The
whole Power Plant.
Close-up
on the sub-station parts. This is one of the test renders to show the clients before
making the final choices on color and texture.
