The blood tubing went through the actor's hair and was just behind the tree out of camera range.  On cue, compressed air was fired through the tubing to blow out the plug in the latex appliance and a second syringe of stage blood was depressed to make the blood flow.  This actually turned out to be pretty gruesome.  As you can see the 'blood' flowed around his eye, down his face to his mouth.  His mouth filled up with this Karo syrup blood, then continued to roll down his face.
