3D Computer Generated Characters:
Here is a sample of some of the 3D computer aliens and characters I've created. Some of this an outgrowth of my early work with sculpture and make-up effects.  The biggest advantage is that I'm not working with a shop full of deadly and toxic chemicals anymore, and am not limited by the physical limitations of some of those materials.

Zombie AttackPoser 4 Zombie Attack! The texture map for this character is based on a photo realistic map I started for another character.  Tinted green and airbrushed in Photoshop with shade of blue and gray that same map transforms into a classic George Romero style zombie.   The gunshot wound is actually made from a scan of a photo of a gunshot make-up I originally created for "The Courier of Death". You can see that image on my Make-up Effects page.

Navigator My version of a Guild Navigator from Frank Herbert's "Dune" novels.

A really big bug. Kind of a cross between a crab and a spider. © Copyright 1997 Vince Backeberg.

bug02.jpg (42650 bytes)Wider view of the 'modeling set'. The calculator in the foreground is a very simple model with one detailed map for the face. The sculpting wheel is almost an exact copy of the real one. I even made scans of it for the texture on the 3D model.

Alien HeadAn Alien head. The skin textures were originally from scans of octopus skin. (see image at bottom of page) I bought a small whole octopus at a local store intending to scan it with my HP Scanjet scanner. I sort of forgot about it and it sat in the back of the refrigerator for over a week. By the time I remembered and went to scan it, that mollusk was starting to get pretty ripe. But the textures were really neat looking so I scanned it in anyway. This new version is using a mixture of MAX procedural textures.al_eye01.jpg (38806 bytes)
