Vancouver for Peace meeting Minutes February 12, 2007

Next meeting date will be March 20th , the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Location will be announced later. Due to the upcoming events, it was felt we needed a meeting next month. Gary Cotton will call Den Mark Wichar about availability of St. Luke's, several people offered their homes as well.

General Peter Pace for Marshall Lecture, Wednesday Feb 21 at Hudson's Bay High School, 11 AM. Genny Kortes ( gekortes617@hotmail.com ) will protest outside the school and invites others to join her as per her email earlier today.

Payment for film nights to be legal. - Don Steiger, our film night coordinator has expressed concern about copyright law. We honor Don's efforts in arranging the next film. For this film, we are willing to pay the $55 to show it. The film for Feb. 27 is still being finalized. However, it was felt that in the future we would like to use videos instead that we would have free permission from the producers.

40th Anniversary of Israeli Occupation - Lorie Wood asked for us to endorse End the Occupation 2007, which we approved. Lorie will do this for us on-line. Endorsements can also be done individually at www.endtheoccupation.org Lorie also had information about an event on March 7 of Palestinians visiting from Hebron and Bel'in, which is now on the website,.

Vigil to remember Rachel Corrie on March 16 th is being arranged by Wilbur Wood to meet at the Esther Short Park clock tower at sunset. People are invited to bring flashlights with cups on top instead of candles, as candles cannot be burned in the park. Wilbur will send the information to Mike for the website.

4th Anniwarsary of latest phase of Iraq war events

Sunday March 18 afternoon at Pioneer Courthouse Square - Peace Festival, Activism Fair and March. Angie Lindquist requested that VFP endorse the march, which was approved with $50 to support the march as well as to secure a table. Mike Ellison will find people to be at the table.

Monday March 19 4-6:30 visibility action at Terry Schrunk Plaza organized by Peace and Justice Works.

The Columbian Editorial Board will be contacted by Edie Cotton, who would like to arrange a forum with them.

Other agenda items were postponed until our next meeting since they were not time-sensitive.

Minutes of November 15th, 2005 Vancouver for Peace Meeting

Meeting was attended by John Howes, Bob Fizzell, Lorie Wood, Wilbur Wood, Jo’an Sterr, Marion Ward, Mike Ellison and Kay Ellison. (Did we forget anyone??)

1. After a lengthy discussion of the pros and cons of Vancouver for Peace becoming an official 501c3 non-profit organization, it was decided for Vancouver for Peace to do the paperwork for this to happen. This would not affect what Vancouver for Peace is able to do, as our policies have been from the beginning in alignment to requirements for 501c3’s: not to campaign for any candidates, but instead to be involved with issues. (Since the meeting in November, we have been issued our ID number. We will need to do by-laws, create a board of directors, and fill out either articles of incorporation or association. These documents can be generically done, and just one official board meeting needs to be done each year.)

2. It was decided to give Matt Chandler a $100 honorarium when he will speak at the library on December 6 th. We want to support Matt in his peacemaking efforts with Christian Peacemakers Teams in Iraq and Palestine.

3. It was also decided to support Channel 11 by paying for Democracy Now! through Alicia Balassa. We will reimburse Alicia for the $75 she paid for this to happen for 2005, and give her another $75 for 2006. Technical note about this issue: Alicia is a FVTV member, thus able to sponsor a show.

4. Cindi Fisher asked Vancouver for Peace to help print color copies of posters to promote the Marathon Peace Jubilee on December 30. Marion Ward has kindly agreed to make color copies of the 8 l/2 x 11 posters for Cindi.

5. There is considerable interest in paying for bus signs for peace. This will be brought up at another Vancouver for Peace business meeting.

What we’ve been working on and want to continue

  • If you want to be on the Vancouver Peace and Justice Fair planning group see Kay Ellison (ellisonka@yahoo.com / 696-4840)
  • Organizing our email lists. Responses indicate a desire to use Riseup.net and put all on that list. Need someone to do this. This will replace the Coollist. Mike has about 500 people who are on Mike’s e-mail list on his computer. We need someone to take care of our new e-mail. Is there anyone who is interested in helping with our new e-mail lists? Rob Schneider has offered to maybe help with this process.
  • Discuss VFP Principles – See Addendums
  • What is our strategy to move forward on advocating for end to the Iraq war?
    • Continuing our lobbying. Update and how to continue. See Addendums
    • Tim Probst made a presentation about a lobbying effort directed toward Senator Cantwell about a rebuilding program for Afghanistan. On Wednesday, November 30 th, 5 PM, Afghan Ambassador Jawad will be at an event at Pearson Air Park, which we can attend. Tim Probst will be giving us more information about this as things develop. Mike will put this on the website. Danny Nichols would like copies to pass out at his school.
      • We need experts on issues/bills.
      • We need a working group on lobbying.
      • We have experts on Israel-Palestine issues.
    • Continuing vigils, demonstrations, etc? What is happening with vigils this week? Need coordinators for vigils. Danny Nichols will take signs out to vigils on Fourth Plain on Thursday at 6PM. Danny is also thinking of doing a vigil in Battleground by Safeway. He will do signs, similar to how the library vigil is done. He feels there are people in Battleground who would welcome others to join with.
    • DottiAnn Blakemore is willing to help with the 164 Avenue vigil. Mike Ellison will put DottiAnn in touch with Mike Turnauer who is taking leadership on the 164 th Avenue vigil. The vigiling will continue on 6PM Wednesdays, Mill Plain and 164 th.. Jane Wulff’s guideline revision committee agreed to make the card/flyer covenant to give participants. Jane will e-mail Mike Turnauer about the covenant. The vigil on 164 th is less positive than on Fourth Plain, but worth doing. Because training wouldn’t reach each person who comes each time, perhaps a small card/flyer could be written to give each person who comes as part of the group each week to set ground rules or principles for being at a vigil.
    • Iraq war “teach-in”/”forum”. WSU Vancouver Center for Social and Environmental Justice is a possible partner. Need to form a working group on this. Sue Peabody from WSU is leading this. DottiAnn Blakemore and Kay Ellison would like to help with this.
  • Options to Military Service – Marion Ward is leading this. There is a meeting Sunday, October 9 th, 4PM to 6PM at 3512 F. Street, at Marcia McReynold’s Listening House. Is there anyone who would like to help Marion?
  • We need help with tabling at Farmer’s Market through October. Contact Wilbur Wood at tablesforpeace@aol.com / (360) 693-6148. – send email about this. Would anyone like to continue tabling at the library during the winter? send email about this.

New items for discussion

  • We need people to table at the Making Democracy Work. Contact is Den. – send email about this
  • Katrina petition - how much should we promote this? Is there a champion? No time to get to this.
  • Dave Goldberg – Event (rally/march/demonstration) with broader progressive community. Does anyone want to work with him on this at this time? “Wrong Way March” Dave would like to see different groups in the march together. He would like us to show people that our ideas are mainstream ideas. A rally is suggested with speakers at either the beginning or end of the march. A date is to be decided, would anyone like to help Dave? Volunteers are DenMark, and Monica Nielsen.
  • Sponsor Marathon Peace Jubilee? Promote or participate?? YES. Cindi Fisher will send us information as she knows it.
  • Should we send out Cindi Fisher’s email on mental health advocacy? Decided to send a message for interested people to contact Cindi.
  • Send out Joy Ellison’s Nonviolence Workshop advertisement? Yes, it is possible to send this out on the e-mail.
  • Advertising on buses?
