Athens is located in a part of
Greece known as Attica. In fact it is at the head of a gulf formed by Attica. Ancient sailors no doubt would sail along the coast for a verity of reasons. The last part of Attica, and thus home, they would see was Cape Sunion.
In the fifth century B.C. the ancient sailors dedicated a temple of Poseidon, god of the sea on the tip of Cape Sunion. It is small in comparison to some of its sister temples however, it is fairly well preserved. The temple of Poseidon forms one point of an equilateral triangle with two other Doric temples. The first one is the temple of Aphnia on the island of Aegina. The second is the Parthenon in Athens. I am guessing that there was meaning for this, however it has been lost in the sands of time. Cape Sunion is a nice daytrip from Athens. It is quiet, peaceful and you have a Doric temple all to your self. The road takes you down the beautiful Apollo coast and the view from the cape is impressive. I like the simplicity of the temple and the lines its columns form. Most of my Apollo coast photos I took were through a bus window so I did not include them here. I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, . Options
