San Francisco Water Front

DescriptionPhotos
This collection of photographs was taken from Treasure Island. They pictures of structures on Treasure Island, the San Francisco waterfront and the Bay Bridge. Many tourists never leave the San Francisco. As a result, those tourists miss one of the most spectacular sites San Francisco has to offer. That is a view of San Francisco from outside of the city. There are many spots to view San Francisco from, one of which is Treasure Island. What many people mistakenly call Treasure Island is a complex of two islands. The first island, a rocky crag sticking out of San Francisco bay is called Yurba Buena Island. Yurba Bunea was the original name of the settlement that later became San Francisco. One theory as to how the island got named has to do with sloppy cartography. The name Yurba Buena was written on maps to name the settlement. However, it was written so close to the island, navigators thought the cartographer was naming the island. Prior to the 1930's, Yurba Buena was a non-discrete island (with a few native American settlements) in the middle of the bay. However, in the 1930'it became the anchor point for the middle of the Bay Bridge. A tunnel was dug through the island linking a cantilever bridge from Oakland with the suspension bridge from San Francisco. As the Bay and Golden Gate bridges neared completion, a brain child was born. San Francisco wanted to show off its bridges. The best place to view the bridges from, they figured, was the center of the bay. It was also hypothesized, that an airport would be needed for the new and budding aviation industry. The ideal spot would be the center of San Francisco bay. Thus Treasure Island was born. A man made island was built right next to Yurba Buna island to house the Worlds Fair (which would show off the bridges) and to house the new San Francisco air port. History conspired to change the fate of Treasure Island. By the end of World War II, the Jet had rendered the air port obsolete. The cold war was born so the navy took over Treasure Island as a Navy base and the coast guard took over Yurba Buena Island. The navy has left Treasure Island, but the coast guard still controls Yurba Buena island. Treasure Island offers great views, and a good chance to see the Art Deco airport terminal.
