Ialyssos was one of three ancient city states on the island of Rhodes. Located about
10 to 15 km from present day Rhodes town, high atop a fortified hill, this city state stood
overlooking fertile plains and the sea. For its own protection and gain,
it banded with the other two city states on the island in 480 B.C. to form a
league. The three city states moved the capital of the Rhodes to present day
Rhodes Town.
Not much is left of this city state except for the foundation of a Doric Temple. There was an early Christian basilica built practically right on top of it. This was replaced by a 6th century Byzantine monastery. For some reason (not stated in my source books) the Byzantines were laid siege by Genoa but were able to repel this invader. However, the Byzantines were then laid siege to by the knights of Saint John (I guess for the monastery). The Knights kept the monastery but their capital was in Rhodes Town. The site of ancient Ialyssos fell to ruins under the Turks. Control of the Island went to the Italians at the turn of the 20th century. The Italians, to get tourists, rebuilt the monastery into a 4 chapel church. One for Orthodox Christians, one for Catholic Christians, one for the Knights, and one for relics. The Italians also built a "Stations of the Cross" leading to a huge cross you can climb with a great panoramic view. From the north of the site you have an even better view of Rhodes town. I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, . |
