VSS/VYC Distance Race Sailing Instructions

VSS/VYC DISTANCE RACE

An 8.57 NM course starting at the Venice Inlet start/finish mark (VISF), then proceeding southwest 2.16 NM to a virtual mark (M10), then proceeding SE 2.68 NM to a virtual mark (M11), then proceeding north 3.73 NM to the Venice Inlet start/finish mark (VISF); or you may proceed from VISF to M11, then to M10, then back to VISF.  Your choice of direction rounding the marks may affect your time.
 
    1. There are three virtual marks: the start/finish and two additional virtual marks, each designated by a GPS location (waypoint…see below).
    2. The race consists of leaving the start/finish mark, proceeding to the designated marks in either direction and returning to the start/finish mark.
    3. You may start at any time on race day depending on your forecast of wind and tide.*Please see note below.
    4. The race is self timed and self reported (report start time and finish time) to the VYC Dockmaster (941-483-3625) or Race Committee representative Bob Jensen at rsjensen73@yahoo.com.
    5. For safety, you must report when you are leaving to race to the VYC Dockmaster (483-3625) and again report to the Dockmaster when you have returned.  After hours leave a recorded message of your name, boat name, and start and finishing times.
    6. Each race will be scored using the “Time-on-distance” formula and each boats PHRF rating.  The race marks and official distance will be posted on the VSS and VYC web sites (www.venice-sailing-squadron.organd www.veniceyachtclub.com) and at the VYC Dockmaster’s office.

M10 (2.30 NM southwest of the Venice Inlet) GPS lat/long: N27-05.00 / W82-30.00
 
M11 (3.73 NM south of the Venice Inlet) GPS lat/long: N27-03.00 / W82-28.00
 
Course round trip distance: 8.57 NM.
 
*NOTE: Some of the racers have expressed an interest in starting around the same time. Please "reply all" with your approx start time so that other skippers may join you if they desire. Be safe and have fun!!
