FREEMAN, Canzada,1814,,(S)-Lela Mae /HAYSLIP/,3

FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS JUST RESEARCH NOTES,

AS I AM NOT SURE THAT CANZADA IS JAMES  FREEMANs' FATHER.

From 1850 Census Cass County, Georgia.

M-432 Roll 63. Page 189A. The 12th Division. No wife, three sons. James R., age 16; William, age 13; John, age 7.

There is a C.W. FREEMAN in the 1840 S.C. Census. EDGE 109, "no twp L", Edgefield County, No township listed. Several boys and girls. No names listed. Edgefield County is in west, S.C., bordered by the Savannah River. It is just east of Augusta, GA. There is also a town of Edgefield in the county.

In 1850 Census, Canzada lived in 12th District (Cass County, GA).

There is only one FREEMAN in the 1840 Cass County census: James Freeman who lived in what became Gordon County, GA.

A William J. Freeman is in the 1880 Bartow County Census (Kingston

District). William J. was 41 years old at the time of the 1880 census

and was born in 1839. He had three sons and one daughter (no wife):

William A., age 19 b 1861 in GA;

Ana L., age 13 b 1862 in Indiana;

John L., age 10 b 1870 in Kentucky;

Robert L, age 9 b 1871 in Kentucky.

William J. was born in S.C. His father was born in VA, his mother in

S.C.

Added most the following information to the web site under Freemans in Cass County Ga "Cass1850.htm".

From Beth Sauceman

"I have just finished reading your Freeman information. I feel sure we are working on the same line, we just have to prove it. Our John, born 1816 SC, came to Cass Co. GA in the late 1840's. Was there on the 1850 census. This is the last time I found him and family on census in GA. I think some of the Freeman families went over into Al, but I haven't pursued that yet as my library has only the 1850 AL census index. However, by 1880 Joseph Kilpatrick FREEMAN was back in Bartow Co. with wife Amanda Peek and his sister Mahala Caroline. Another brother, George married 1878 in Bartow Co. and apparently lived the rest of his life there. Our Joseph Kilpatrick would have been too young for Civil

War service. I have a picture of Joseph K., probably made at the time of his marriage to Mary Abrams Gray abt 1895. He also appears to be a very tall man, absolutely piercing eyes, long nose, HUGE ears and hands. The same ears were passed on to his son Joseph Bryan. I will keep you updated of any information I find, as I hope you will me.

Three households are listed in sequence in the 1850 Cass County GA census:

Canzada Freeman, Caroline M. Furr, John Freeman. Caroline is Caroline FREEMAN Furr and her husband James Furr died in 1846. From Cass/Bartow County, GA Abstracts of will book a, b 1836-1922.Will book A page 34, 35, 36: "FURR, JAMES Cass County 25 August 1846 recorded 05 Oct 1846 ,Wife: Caroline Freeman son Daniel Furr. Executor: William Freeman, brother-in-law lives on Two Run Creek. Witness: William D. Hassell, WIlliam Latimer, Arthur Haire.

Executor: William Freeman, brother-in-law lives on Two Run Creek

Witness: William D Hassell, William Latimer, Arthur Haire"

Note: Two Run Creek is North of Cassville. Take 41 North from Cassville. On a 1987 map, looks like Two Run Creek Road is on the right  just past Gaddis Road which is on the left and just before Cedar Creek Road which is on the right. Looks like only a mile or so outside Cassville.

Potential leads that I have not sufficiently researched are marked between '***".

Sources. The basic data (relationships, dates) for James and Lavina and most their descendants was supplied by my aunt Carrie Freeman Ball in 1994. SInce then most of the relationships and dates have been confirmed by other family members. I am adding other sources as time permits.

2002-8-3  -  A genealogy chart Mike Freeman provided shows that James and Lavina had a son: Marion or Morton Washington Freeman ?born/died 9-12-1857. The same chart shows Lois Safronis Freeman born 10-20-1857. Marion/Morton could be their first born child?

2003-2-14 - Package from James D. Freeman II of the genealogy work his father performed:

Marion Washington Freeman d 9-12-1857 was child of James and LVC Freeman.  This would be just a month before Lois Safronis Freeman was born. The package does not mention Lois.

2001-10 --The following is from the notes of FELTON FREEMAN, now deceased who did the research on this back in the 1930's or 40's. These notes were provided by Houston Freeman of Rome ,  --

James D. Freeman served in the civil war four years. After two years he was wounded by two minnie balls and sent home on furlough. His daughter Nancy was a baby and was called the "War Baby". ***Both James and his 18 year old brother are buried in "Gaines Cemetery" at Crow Springs near Adairsville.*** No church is there now. James Dickerson Freeman's father was born in Scotland.

Melvina Griffin Freeman died of a hemorrhage in her throat caused by a severe cold. She is buried at the Presbyterian Church at Euharlee, GA. Her mother was Nancy Caine who married a "Whitter" in Ireland without parental consent. She and her husband were exiled and started to the United States. During the 11 month voyage her husband died. When she arrived in America she married a Griffin. The name 'Whitter" is now known as "Whitworth". ***Levina Griffin's family were the Griffins who were some of the first lawyers in Rome.*** Her date of birth was 5-4-1836. She died 9-15-1916.

-END of notes from Felton Freeman--

2001-10 From Houston Freeman:

All of James and Lavina's children were born in Red Ligon community in Bartow County, GA near Mulinax Mountain. It is uncertain as to where he was from - Ireland or Scotland. Most information puts him from Scotland.

There are varying opinions as to the middle name of James Freeman. I have always heard it as "Davis". Vic Freeman has three documents that indicate his middle initial is R. It appears the most convincing information shows his middle name was "Dickerson". Being as he had a son named after him.

Houston believes that James' mother or grandmother was a McClain. Houston and Ann Freeman believe that James was a log splitter.

Notes from Vic:

Mullinax Mountain is 1,100 feet above sea level. I have not yet found a Crow Springs near Adairsville, but have found references to Crow Springs in Cunyus book History Of Bartow County. ***The Crow Springs of these references appears to be near White, GA which is NE of Cassville. On page 129, Cunyus says "The Baptist Church at Crow Springs was built in 1868 on land given by J.L. Luther. It was originally on a hill, but later removed nearer the spring." On page 179, Cunyus says: "Crow Springs: in the 5th district, were first settled by William Crow of South Carolina before the Civil War. A son, Linton C. Crow and his family, lives at one of the springs (~1933). Best's Chapel and a Baptist church are located near the other spring. Zimri Jackson operated a saw mill at the springs at one time."***

Ref: Bartow Counties Cemeteries Vol 1, page 470:  If you magnify the map significantly, centered directly beneath the 'TE" in  "White West' in the center of the map there is a Best Chapel. Beneath that and a little to the right there is a Crowe Springs Church. Comparing this map with a current map of Bartow County, it appears that Best Chapel was located: From Cassville go East on Cassville White Road.Note that almost immediately there is a Shinal Gaines Road to the right. Looks like Shinal  Gaines Road ends at Old Cassville White Road. Maybe Gaines Cemetery was on this Gaines Road? Continuing on Cassville White Road (not old C-W Road) you will eventually cross under Interstate 75. Just after passing I75 turn left (North) on Old Peeples Valley Road which becomes Spring Place Road. On Old Peeples Valley Road , the map looks like Old Peeples Valley Road intersects with Cassville Pine Log Road. Go left (West/North). I can't tell if this is Cassville Pine Log Road or Old Peeples Valley Road. After going left on Old Peeples Valley/Cassville Pine Log  Road the next left should be Gaines Road. It looks like it is only a mile or less long. It ends at Crowe or Crowe Springs Road. I can't tell. Maybe James is buried in this area around this Gaines Road/Crowe Springs Road.

2001-09-29 I removed middle initial from James Freeman.

2001-09-29 Email from Houston Freeman:

"I just got through going over some papers and notes of FELTON FREEMAN who is

a descendent of James Freeman. James Freeman had several children one of

which was Jefferson Davis Freeman (grandpa). Jeff Davis had a brother named

James Dickerson Freeman Jr. which is Feltons grandpa. Feltons daddy was Paul

Freeman who is also the daddy of Mable Freeman Hall, Ann Hall Stewarts

mother. Ann grew up on 19th street just across Maple street from where I grew

up. Felton did this research when he got out of the Military sometimes in the

40"s or maybe earlier. Ann has copies of all his notes. When I mentioned this

to Winston he said he did remember Maude Fountain Stephens saying that James

Freemans full name was James Dickerson Freeman. "

2001-09-20 Talked with Houston Freeman. He thinks that James' name was James Davis Freeman, not James R. Freeman. Several other people have told me the same thing. Also, he said that James was a logsplitter, died topping a tree, was of Scotch ancestry and his mother or grandmother was a McClain.

James may have died on June 4, 1971 or 1873. Elmer Painter saw a family bible where the date was listed as 6-4-1873. The Confederate Pension Request of Lavina Freeman shows 6-4-1871.

At the time of the 1860 census, James and Lavina lived in the 828 District which was Cassville.

For the July 13, 1867 Georgia Voters Rolls, James R. Freeman lived in the 5th (828 G.M) election precinct of Bartow County, GA. For the 1870 census, they lived in Subdivision No. 5 in Bartow County, Cartersville Post Office. There is a separate document on vicfreeman dot com  that goes into detail about where James and Lavina lived.

According to U.S. Census, James Freeman was born in South Carolina in 1833, maybe the son of Canzada Freeman. His mother's name is unknown. William (b. about 1837) and John (b. about 1843) Freeman may be his younger brothers. <1850 Cass Census>). His family must have moved to Cass County, Georgia between 1840 and 1850 because Canzada does not show up in the 1840 census.  James married LAVINA GRIFFIN on March 11, 1855 in Cass County. The only reference  to Canzada Freeman I have been able to find is the entry in the 1850 Cass County, GA census.

James R. enlisted in Company 'C', 63rd Regiment Georgia Volunteer Infantry

See Military, Family Related in this FTW database.

James was wounded June 1864 near Atlanta. He spent the remainder of the war at home in Cass County. According to I.D. Henderson, who was with James when he was wounded, James "was suffering from his wounds for a long time after the war."

According to Lavina, James R. died in June 1871, in Bartow County. Huston thinks he is buried in an old cemetery that is out in the woods close to Cassville. Maybe Stilesboro Cemetery. Stilesboro is just south of Euharlee. ***The old Gaines Cemetery is also a candidate.*** In 1910, Lavina submitted an "Application for Pension by a Widow Under Act of 1910." According to the application, She and James R. were living together when he died in 1871. He was wounded near Atlanta. As a "Witness as to Service of Husband and Marriage", I.D. Henderson stated that James was in the hospital when Johnston surrendered on April 26, 1865. Mr. Henderson also stated that he was with James when James received his wound and personally knew of the circumstances. In the "Affidavit of Two Freeholders" that was submitted with the pension request, J.O. Logan and R.L. Griffin confirmed that Lavina (in 1910) owned the following property: - 60 acres of land with a value of $600 - One mule and one cow with a value of $110 - She also received $75 a year rent from the land.

<from application for pension - Mrs. L.V.C. Freeman, April 20,1910>

The pension application, the records for Company "C", and the 1850 Census for Canzada Freeman refer to a James R. Freeman. I believe that James R. is our ancestor because the pension application is for "L.V.C.Freeman". The chances of there being another Freeman widow with those initials in Bartow County is slight. What does the tombstone say? Haven't found the correct graveyard.  How about the obituary? Haven't found the obituary. Did he die in 1871 or 1873? Also, a witness to the pension request is R.L. Griffin, who is probably Ransom L. Griffin who is one of Lavina's younger brothers.

I have checked the available Cassville newspapers and have found no reference to any of these events.

The Death Certificates for both Robert Lee Freeman and Saphronia (Freeman) Fountain gave J.R. Freeman as the father.

1850 census shows James R. born in S.C.

1860 census shows James as a farmer born S.C., Lavisa born GA. Value Real Estate = no value; Personal Estate = $30

1870 census shows James as farm hand born in S.C. Value Real Estate = no value; Personal Estate = $125

1870 census shows Lavina born in Ga.

1900 census shows Jeff D's father and mother born in GA.

1910 census shows Jeff D's father born in S.C. and mother born in Alabama.

According to Paula and John Freeman (my brother) rememberances of conversations with Dave Freeman (my father), James was a cook for the confederacy. Got out of the army during or after the Civil War and settled in Kingston,GA. He was 6 ft 6 or 7 in tall and weighed 300 lbs. This size may be important because reports from people researching other Freeman's in Cass County in the 1850's report that some of these Freeman's were also very large.

1992-12-29. 1870 census:  Nat Archives,Phila, PA. Roll #135 Page 206, Subdivision #5 Bartow County, GA. Cartersville Post Office. Census was dated 19 July 1870. James was listed in the census as a farm hand, with the value of real estate left blank, the value of personal estate was listed as $128.00. Lavina owned 60 acres of land on Corson Road in Bartow County between Euharlee and Rome. 34.10.113N 085.01.431W. Go out Chulio Road past Powell Road (Floyd County), turn right on Corson Road. The Red Ligon School (named for James Oliver "Red" Ligon) was at the intersection of Chulio and Corson Roads. Go about three or three and a half miles. As you start around a very small curve on the right, there is a cable line by a large cedar tree. The house was just next to the tree. The house does not exist today. Vestie, who was married to Judson Dunn, also lived on Corson Road, just before you reach the old homeplace. They lived on the left side not a mile down. Their house is gone and another one is built behind where it was but the chimney is still standing, The homeplace was left to the two single children (Robert and Fannie). It was sold when they died for $1,100 with James's grandchildren getting between $1.00 - 2.00 each.(Kathleen got $2.00, Thollie and Bill got $1.49).

Robert died in late 1930's(1937/38) and is buried at Oak Grove church (no markers except for recent years). Fannie (Francis) died 1953 or 1954 and is buried at Euharlee. There is no marker. Note: Winston helped dig her grave.

There is a study of the Freeman's in Cass County in the 1850's at

www.geocities dot net/vicfreeman.

Hunch: William J. Freeman was James' brother. W.J. was born in South Carolina in 1839. He has William A. (b 1861 in GA), Ana L. (b 1862 in Indiana), John L. (b 1870 in Kentucky), Robert L. (b 1871 in Kentucky). He and all his kids lived in Kingston District in GA in1880.

Added the following to web page June 2001 "Cass1850.htm" - > From Beth Sauceman:

There are 5 John Freeman's on the 1840 SC census index -- 1 in Marion Co., 2 in Abbeville, 1 in Fairfield and 1 in Chester or Chesterfield. Which one was born abt 1816, married Bridget (Powers?) abt 1835? Children: Ann, born 1836; Sarah, born 1838; Louisa, born 1842; Mahala Caroline, born 1844; John W, born 1847; George T, born 1848; Lewis P born 1850; and Joseph Kilpatrick, born 1853. This family had moved to Cass Co., GA (now Bartow Co.) by 1850. Other Freeman families on the 1850 Cass Co. census, all from SC, were: William, born abt 1801, wife Frances; Johnson, born 1804, wife Polly; Reuben, born 1811, wife Sarah; Canzada, born 1814. Were they all brothers? Living in Reuben's h/h was his mother, Sarah, age 66, born NC. Information on any of these people greatly appreciated.

Mary Freeman Childers remembers Thollie telling her that James was a Cherokee. Have not been able to confirm this? Newspaper obituary? Winston Freeman does not remember any mention of Indian Blood. Carrie has some pictures with James Davis Freeman handwritten on them.

... I have no idea what his middle intial was but in the old Bible I saw at a man that owned an egg farm at Spring Creek his initials appeared to be either D or G. My best guess would be a D.  Great Uncle Thollie (Freeman) had a family Bible that he said the entries were made by his mother Mary. I have no idea James was mentioned in his Bible. However he did tell me that his mother Mary had taught her husband Jeff to write.

Thollie and my Grandfather both mentioned to me about an aunt that lived in Alabama that had James Freeman's discharge from the Civil War and she was also suppose to have a minnie ball that had been in his leg several years and finally gangrene set in and it had to be removed. Thollie told me that he had  been to James unmarked grave at a churchyard in Cassville where his wife is also buried in an unmarked grave. If Dave (Freeman) was still living he might have known because he went with Thollie to the site.

Vic's note: James' wife Lavina is buried at Euharlee Cemetery.

Granddaddy Clarence Freeman also told me he thought his grandfather James came from Virginia. Seems like he also mentioned Clay Co., NC as a place where he once lived. Granddaddy Freeman also told me James was once champion log splitter in North Georgia, that he could split a log clean through the eye or bow the axe handle. He stood 6'7" and weighed 310 pounds. I have been told by Granddaddy that James was killed while he was topping a tree, that it swayed him out. Do you know anything about this?

I'm not sure what company James was in during the Civil War. I heard that he was an ass't doctor at one time and I heard that he was once a cook.

I have no idea who the aunt in Ala was but Clarence and some other brothers  visited with her. Sigsbee, is near Doerun, Georgia. It is also called Jackson, Ga.  Clarence and family lived on several farms there. My mother showed me two houses where they lived. One of his daughters is buried at the Rose of Sharon Church near Doerun, Ga.   Wright Proctor and his wife Elmore Thrash Proctor lived not far from Clarence, they lived at Funston, Ga. Also I'll have to check but another  Freeman brother lived near Moultrie, Georgia. His name may have been Eddie, but I'm not certain.

Probably my reference to ass't doctor would be what we know now as a corpman in the Medical Corp.

Swayed out of a tree is caused by rapid motion caused by activity topping it and the tree starts swaying, etc.

Incidentally my aunt Sarah told me that Samuel H. Drummond died of wounds received while fighting in CW at Kenesaw Mt. Have you heard about this?

Regards

***Vic, the Aunt in Alabama in given the P O Address of Cedar Bluff, Ala. This address is not positive but as I recall the letter was written Mary to Arah in 1893.*** A mention of the mother following the daughter to Cherokee County, with the Cedar Bluff, Ala. given to Arah as a specific mailing address. I'll have to re-read these writings to be positive, but I think the name was given as Eula. Also, recall the mention of Jennie as the newly wed who moved to Cherokee Co., Ala. There is also the mention of Buelah King. I think she must have married a King, therein, she would be a sister -in-law. Of these I am not positive, but I have mentioned them before and would suggest checking in these three Ala. counties: Cherokee,  Jackson, and Dekalb for the names surnames of Easley, Bynun, Freeman, and  King. These people(Bynum's and Easley's) later moved to Titus County , Texas and some of them subsequently moved to Arkansas (Eula Easley). This move would have occurred around 1897-1905 I believe.

***On a related issue, Dad (LTC James Davis Freeman 1923-1992) used to tell a story about how Sherman's army spent the night at James' farm and then burned everything when they left. In your

past research did you ever look at the archives for whatever newspaper was for that area of Bartow County.*** I am wondering if there was anything to the story that maybe there was something mentioned ... of course, Sherman's boys were busy burning most of Northwest Georgia at the same time. Anyway a thought.

Obituary furnished by Lisa Ellis.

from the Bartow Tribune, Thursday Sept 28, 1916:

"Mrs. Vinie Freeman

Mrs. Vinnie Freeman, an old and greatly respected woman of Bartow County and related to many prominent citizens of this section of Georgia, died Monday night at 2 o'clock at her home in Euharlee. Mrs.Freeman was the widow of James Freeman, once a highly respected citizen of the county, and was a sister of Cartersville's esteemed fellow townsman, R.L. Griffin. She was 80 years of age and a consistent and loyal member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by five children, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Bright, Miss Fannie Freeman, and Jeff and Robert Freeman. Funeral services were held at Euharlee Tuesday afternoon, attended by hosts of friends, neighbors, and relatives."

From copy of the transaction:

Recorded January 27, 1885. Indenture made Jan 27, 1885 between MELISSA STEPHENS and Mrs. L.V.C. FREEMAN for $600, 17th district, 3rd section of Bartow County, South halves of lots 437, 438, 439 containing sixty acres more or less. Melissa Stephens (her mark). Witnessed by C.W. Dempsey and R.L. Giffin.

From Bartow County Clerk of Superior Court records:

On 7 December 1873, (recorded 3 March 1876) Malissa Stephens sold for $600 cash to H.C. Miller lots no 437, 438, 439 in the 17th district. She got the land from her husband John M. Dempsey (deceased).  She was already Malissa Stephens at this time.

On the same day, Malissa Stephens bought the land back from H.C. Miller for $600. This second transactin was recorded 4 March 1876. I have copies of the documents.

I tried to tract the sales of these lots. I could not find where John M. Dempsey had purchased them. I could find no record that the land had been transferred to Malissa. The only transactions I could find were the two transactions on 7 December 1873, the sales to Lavina Freeman on 27 January 1885, and the sale below where Lavina's estate was sold in 1938.

32 33   Hudson, James

33 34   Leale,  - can't read the census

34 35   Freeman, Levisa V - this is my ancestor. In her household are

Nancy (age 35), Robert (age 33), Fannie (age 31), Lavina V (age 27)

and Dunn, Judson. ALL are listed as single.

35 36   Le..., Albert - can't read the census.

36 37   Bright, David

James and Lavina had 8 kids. . The youngest was born about 1872. In 1900, all living kids lived almost in a row (probably both sides on rural road) on the same road! The two exceptions were James Dickerson (the eldest son) and Jeff D. James Dickerson Freeman lived in Chulio, which is just across the county line from where the  Freeman's listed above lived in 1900. Jeff lived in same district as Lavina. He is listed on page 4 vice page 2 of the 1900 census for Bartow Iron Hill. That means he could not have been too far away.

How about 1910?

Jesse Fountain (Safronis), Robert Freeman (with Levina, and Fannie), Wilson Bright (Maggie), and Judson Dunn (Vestie) lived in a row with no intervening households.

Both the 1900 and 1910 census shows that Lavina had 9 children with 8 still living. The child that had died is probably Marion Washington Freeman died September 12, 1857. References to this child are contained in the document that Bruce Gross, Mike Freeman and James D. Freeman II provided.

I found out that William Jefferson Freeman  is actually William Jefferson Davis Freeman and that he was in Indiana with the Satterfield family when his daughter Arrie Freeman was born. William Ambrose Freeman was his 1st born and he was born in Bartow Co in 1861, but Arrie was born in Indiana in 1867. There were 3 more boys after Arrie and they were all born in Kentucky. Edward-1868, John Thomas-1870 and Robert Lee-1871. Edward died young and they all somehow ended up back in Bartow County minus their mother who was Elizabeth Satterfield, daughter of Hezekiah Satterfield and Martha Duncan.

William Jefferson Davis Freeman, born 1838, in South Carolina, and died 1902 in Jones Co., Ms. moved with his son, William Ambrose, Arrie Freeman who married Winfield Scott Burnside, and Robert Lee and John Thomas, to Ellisville,Jones Co.,Ms. in 1898 during the flu epidemic. They came from Bartow Co. to Talladega Co., Al. and then on to Ms.

I am still digging and I will keep you informed as I  go.

Take care,

William Jefferson Freeman, brother of James, is my gg grandfather on my father\'s side of the family. My grandmother was Ethel Freeman, daughter of William Ambrose Freeman. One of William Ambrose\'s siblings was Aurrie Freeman who married Winfield Scott Burnside. Another sibling of William Ambrose was Robert Lee Freeman, born 1872,and he died in Ms. in 1904. A sibling of my grandmother, Ethel, was William Marion Freeman, born 1889 in Talladega Co., Al., died 1906 in Ms. It is interesting that names like AURRIE and JEFFERSON and MARION are showing up in both James and William Jefferson\'s line.

The W Freeman in the 1860 Ga, Cass County, Kingston census is the correct age and correct occupation (cooper) to be this WJ Freeman.

1870 Kentucky, Jefferson County, Louisville census, William was living with Elizabeth who was born in Tenn. Also in the household was a male named Thomas Satterfield (index gives the name Thomas).

Using the 1880 Ga, Bartow County, Kingston census gives the birthplace of the  mother of William A, Ara, John and Robert as Tenn. I am going to list the children under William and Elizabeth, not William and Sarah. If you know differently, let me know.

Do you have any info on this William Jefferson Freeman as far as siblings or mother's origins or who his father may have been?

My grandmother was Ethel Lorraine Freeman and she was the daughter of William Ambrose.

WJ moved with his mother and siblings from South Carolina. I do not know where in SC but I do know that he appears on the 1850 census for Cass/Bartow County.  Our family tradition says that he was a POW in PA. during the Civil War. I do not know the names of his siblings but I do know on the 1850 Census he appears with a Canzada Freeman and a James(16) John(7) and William (13). I do know

he was born in 1838.

The mother's maiden name of Duncan is a family oral tradition as is the thing about the divorce. However, it could be that WJ GOT THE DIVORCE from his 1st wife, Sarah A. Meadows and then married Elizabeth Satterfield. There is an Elizabeth Satterfield living in Cass/Bartow at the same time as WJ. His son, William Ambrose is born in Kingston, in Jan of 1861 and  WJ enters service in CW in Co. K, 19th Inf on June 11, 1861.

2005-06-04 There is a James Duncan (male age 24 born Tenn) in the household of Hezekiah Satterfield  in the 1850 Ga Cass County census. There is also an Elizabeth Satterfield age 9.

I found info on the William Jefferson Freeman, b. Sept. 22, 1838 SC d. Oct. 20, 1902 in Jones, MS. He married Elizabeth Satterfield 2nd,  b. abt. 1842. His father was listed as ? Freeman, married Duncan. His middle name being Jefferson tends to make me think even more that he was James Freeman's brother and James named his son, Jefferson, after him. William married first Sarah Meadows l/23/1853 in Cass Co., GA. Children:

There is a John C Freeman in the 1900 Oconee County, Chattooga Township, SC.

The dates for John are way off, but the names and dates for everyone else fits with what others had provided me.

The 1880 Pickens County, SC census has John and Rebecca with two unnamed children. I suspect that the census taker took the data from a neighbor.

Also there are the John Freeman's in the 1870 Georgia Bartow County census. They already have a wife. I can't find this John Freeman in the 1880 census.

Got 1900 Census for James Freeman.

Heritage Quest Digital Microfilm T623\196\256B

I changed the following data:

James S. born 10/21/1860 to Nov 1859.

wife from Dosia Perry to Mary M.

Daughters Arrie and Beatrice are not in the 1900 Census,

but a daughter Viola b Nov 1889 is.

--- end Jan 1, 2001

From either Polk County or Floyd County Heritage book:

James S Freeman is listed as James Dickerson Freeman husband of Doshia Perry Freeman.

It also says that Doshia was Jesse Paul Freeman's mother. I believe that the 1900 and 1910 Federal Census disproves this.

Nov 10, 2001

There are some discrepancies between the children info I have received and what the census shows.

I will make my formal list of children match the census.

The discrepancies are Aurrie (not in census), Viola and Birdie (in census, not in list from Houston). Chances are that Aurrie and Birdie are the same person. Viola may have died between 1900 and 1910. She was 10 in 1900.

1900 census shows they were married 20 years.

Jim Freeman was killed at Robert's Brothers store in Aragon, GA. He was a watchman and was shot to death by burglars on 28 April 1914. Wish I had the death certificate - probably issued in Floyd County? The death certificate may show the 'Jr'. I have yet to find anything in writing  to substantiate the 'Jr'. I do not doubt it, just want to prove it.

02-14-2003: From James D. Freeman II: Jim was shot 17 times and is buried in Aragon in 1913/1914.

Aragon  is in Polk County, GA.

From Cedartown Standard Thursday 30 April 1914:

Murder at Aragon,

Officer Freeman killled on Tuesday night

While guarding the Aragon Stores against burglars.

The Aragon Stores at Aragon have suffered from burglaries from time to time, and with the hope of eating the criminals Special Baliff FREEMAN has been sleeping in one of the buildings.

Tuesday night about 12:20 o'clock he evidently heard some one enter and got up to investigate. The intruders met and shot him to death, inflicting four wounds and made their escape.

Mr. B.C. Higdon heard the shots at the engine room of the Aragon MIlls, and ran to the store. He found the back door open and summoned Mr. A.C. Auchmutey. They went in and found FREEMAN lying dead.

Caroner J.O. Crabb, accompanied by sheriff J.E. Dempsey, Messrs E.H. Carter and A.C. Duke went over yesterday morning. Mr. Crabb holding an inquest. There were probably at least two assailants as the bullets were of different pattern.

Mr. Freeman had been here Tuesday with a prisoner. He was a good officer and his tragic end is deeply regretted.

From Cedartown Standard Thursday 7 May 1914:

Aragon Atrocity

Has occasioned greatest excitement.

The murder last week of Mr. J.D. FREEMAN, the constable and watchman at Aragon, created wild excitement at the time, and there has been little abatement.

NIne bullets entered Freeman's body, fired from two guns, and there was every indiction that he made a desperate struggle for his life at his post in the Aragon Stores.

The rain at the time of the tragedy obliterated the tracks of the murdrers, and clues have been hard to find.

Buster Wade was arrested on Tuesday and brought to jail here because of threats which he is alleged to have made against Freeman.

SHeriff J.E. Dempsey is spending most his time at Aragon, trying to ferret out the criminals.

A Pinkerton detective is also there working on the case, and uch additional excitement was created Tuesday night by someone firing a shot through his window, thus leading to the belief that the murderers are still there.

Notes for DOSIA PERRY:

In the 1910 Federal Census for Bartow County, GA Dosia was listed as 44 years old. The census also had some obvious inaccuracies:

1.  Showed that James and Dosia had been married for 30 years. The 1900 census shows that James was married to Mary in 1900.

2.  Showed that they had 10 children, all still living. The names of four of the five childred listed in the household are the same as those listed in the 1900 census for James and Mary.

Following was taken from an article in the Floyd County genealogy book submitted  by: Ann Hall Stewart, 68 Vernon Road, N.E., Rome, Floyd County, GA 30165.

494 Jessie Belle Williams Freeman and  Jesse Paul Freeman

  Slain Deputy

Jessie Belle Williams Freeman was born in Bartow County,  June 28, 1887 and died April 11, 1972, in Floyd County. She was the daughter of Isaiah and Ellen Dora Bruce Williams. She spent most of her life in Floyd County. She was an accomplished seamstress and worked for many years in the alteration department of Millers Department on Broad Street. She also was hired by many  prominent ladies of Rome to sew for them. Jessie was married to Jesse Paul Freeman  on March 24, 1901.  They had five children.

James Finnemore;

Dewitt W.;

Willie B.;

Felton 0pal; and

Mable Inez Freeman Hall (married W. Colquitt Hall).

Jesse Paul Freeman was born October 31, 1882, son of  Doshia Perry Freeman  and  James  Dickerson Freeman.  Paul was a policeman in Rockmart  and also a guard at the Floyd County  Prison, also known as the "chaingang". He later became a deputy sheriff in Rome and worked as a nightwatchman at the chemical works. Paul Freeman was shot and killed November 2, 1930 by John Newton Robinson, alleged 'bootlegger", according to an account in the Rome News Tribune. Paul was driving by Robinson's residence and two other men were in the car with him. As they got in front of the house they saw a Chrysler roadster parked in front. They came along side the car and saw a man come around the house stuffing a bottle into his coat. Freeman stopped the car, jumped out and gave chase to the man and the liquor. The man retraced his steps, ran back around the house and as he passed a corner of the house, broke the bottle on the side. Witnesses stated that the unknown man and Freeman disappeared but they could still see their feet and Freeman caught the man he was chasing. A few seconds later a shot rang out and Freeman fell. His companions who were still in the car drove away and the parked Chrysler roadster also left. According to witnesses in the Freeman car, a second before Paul was killed they heard a woman scream inside the house saying, "Don't do that, don't do that!" The voice was Robinson's wife who was in the house but told officers that she did not see the shooting. When police  arrived they found Paul Freeman lying near the house. He died instantly, the entire load from the shotgun striking the neck and face.  Robinson stated he did not know Freeman and just saw a man coming  toward the bsck of the house with a gun. He said the man stated,  "Now I've got you, damn you!" Robinson grabbed his shotgun and  fired. Robinson later stated he did know Freeman because Robinson had served a term in Floyd County chaingang and during that time Freeman was a guard there at the camp. Officers stated Robinson was known as a "bootlegger" and a "thief'. Police were not satisfied with Robinson's self-defense plea as they knew "Freeman to have been a man who hardly ever drew his pistol or gun in pursuit of his  duty and as a man who never cursed."

John Newton Robinson was found Guilty of the murder of Jesse Paul Freeman on January 21, 1931 and was sentenced to life imprisonment. The jury deliberated only 30 minutes.
