Lawrence A. Sims was born in Jackson Michigan in 1918. Following the death of his mother in 1925 he was placed in the care of the V.F.W. National Home at Eaton Rapids, where he lived in the first Michigan cottage for three years. Lawrence and his brother Lewis then went to live with their Uncle, Hiram Sims, at Walled Lake, and attended Walled Lake High School. Lawrence enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Dec. 6, 1938, attended Radio School and was serving as a Radioman on the USS Honolulu at the time of the jap attack. He was cited for bravery in that action. He later transferred to Aviation Radio and was again cited for scoring direct hits on enemy ships. He was serving as Radio-Gunner on a plane that was forced down in a heavy fog on June 12, 1942, and failed to return to base. Lawrence left many friends in Walled Lake, to whom he was affectionately known as "Larry". He was the first boy from Commerce Township reported lost in action in World War II.
