PRAISE! Katie Burdette
Hi dear ones,

Sorry, I know how to remove all but your name from the send to but I don't have time right now.   Had to be sure that all of you know of the miracle our Precious Lord and Savior has bestowed upon Kate once again.  She is talking, remembers everything up to the med flight on June 26th but none of the hospital stay (another miracle).  Says her ABC's, counts, colors, plays with clay, etc.  Isn't God awesome, I am so very, very grateful that my family has a personal relationship with Him.  Kate's challenges remain lack of strength in her core body, same for legs, inability to control right hand, we would gratefully love for the diabetes to go away but hey, with what she's already done, so what.  She is to be home schooled by a teacher from the Huntsville City School System.  She has progressed to the point that the officials cannot justify NOT schooling her.  We would be thrilled to take her to them and I am sure that is right around the corner.  She was asleep 95% of the time until last Monday (just a week ago today), seemed to have her nap out, woke up and starting demanding to color, play with blocks, paint, eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, etc.  She almost had Lesley, Darryl and me down and out by 11:00 P.M. from running to get books, etc.  Lesley finally told her it was late and we had to go to bed, she immediately came back with, "No, I want to color!"  She then proceeded to wear me out Tuesday and Wednesday with her just taking little cat naps during the day.  A good friend came over in the afternoon on Wednesday and I conked out for two hours!

I could go on and on but you don't have time to hear me so this is the summation.

I know that Kate's recovery is a result of all the intercessory prayers that have been and are being prayed on her behalf.  This is the risen Savior that we serve, listening to our pleadings and moanings and taking
action now rather than later.  Around the first of the  second week of July the doctors told Les and Darryl to take her home and love her.  HA!  Bless their little hearts, they mean so well and I am unbelieveably grateful to them but they are earthly physicians, now the heavenly One has spoken.  So, if we have Kate for years or a short time (which should not be the case now) we know that God has once again given us the hope and love that we have come to expect from Him.  Either way, He will take care of us and we know that with all the certainty possible this side of Heaven.  All of the people doing everything from errands to praying are God's hands and feet on this Earth, Praise God and to Him all the glory and honor.

We continue to pray for all of you and your needs as you support us.  We absolutely could not live and do well without all of you,

Linda and Vance

Carter
I have a prayer request for you.  Susan Brocato told us Sunday about Carter.  He & some friends were hiking when he fell down a huge embankment and landed in a creek.  He wasn’t breathing when his friends got to him, but one of them happened to be pre-med.  I believe she said he is 19 years old.  Betty Phillips’ son Drew would normally have been with them.  After his initial surgery, they were not able to close his incision because there was so much swelling that they couldn’t place all of his organs back inside.  Susan sent me this update today from his dad:
Dianna Hudson

Connie and I received incredible news today regarding Carter. Late in the day, we received an update regarding Carter's neurological status that was a marked shift from earlier in the day. We spoke to Carter's neurologist who indicated that even though his CT scan had indicated areas of swelling in the brain stem and back of his head, he did not believe that there would be permanent neurological damage. In addition, the damage that was indicated in the cerebellum, while probably permanent, would have no long term lasting
neurological problems. While this prognosis is very early and will require an MRI to confirm, we are praising the Lord for the optimism being openly shown by the treatment team. This open enthusiasm for his recovery has not been shown by any member of the medical or nursing staff to this point. So we are very encouraged and know that God is answering the prayers of so many of you who continue to vigilantly lift up our son.

Other good news is that the surgery to cl ose Carter's incision from the previous surgery went very well. For those of you who are aware that Carter has almost had his appendix removed two or three times over the past couple of years, you will be happy to know it is now gone. Also gone is his gallbladder. Both of these were removed prophylactically in order to help prevent infection. This is one of our next major hurdles. Carter has not shown any sign of pneumonia, or any other infection, to this point, but following his surgery he is more vulnerable than ever. Also, we are concerned about his lung and renal function following his surgery.

Finally, they have removed Carter from the rotating bed that he has been on for the past three days. This bed was brought in to assist his lungs by adding additional capacity when he was face down, using gravity to create more space and expansion of his weak lungs. He is now in a regular bed and we can see his face, even touch him and kiss him. This is a real thrill for us. In addition, his swelling has almost gone and his color is very good. He is beginning to look like himself.

They are taking him off of the paralytic medications that have required the use of a ventilator. We are hoping that he will be able to wake up by the end of the day tomorrow. This will be another important indicator of brain function and how quickly he will be able to return to his old self.

So, our prayer requests are:

* That there would be no infection or pneumonia develop over the next several days, allowing for more sustained healing time.

* That his kidneys would continue to improve and return to normal.

* That he would begin to wake up and be moved from his ventilator as soon as possible.

* That his lungs would continue to improve and there would be no set backs from the surgery.

* That the bacterial infection that was identified today would clear up quickly.

* The his surgical wounds will heal quickly and he will require minimal pain medications.

It has been a roller coaster of a day for us and we are emotionally drained. We have been sustained by the grace of the Lord through seeing answered prayers and by the friends and family who have been so generous with their time, support and love. Carter's recovery is truly a function of the body of Christ in action and the mercy of God to answer intercessory prayers.

Warmest Regards,

Bob Crutchfield

Update 8/25/08

Today was another great day for Car ter. He is becoming more and more alert with each visit and also becoming more irritable. He hates having the endotracheal and the feeding tube in him and really wants to have a drink of water, which he cannot have. He has reached another plateau point on the ventilator weaning, but he did make good progress before reaching a point in which too much stress
was being put on his lungs and his blood pressure was climbing too high. But the medical staff continues to use the term "remarkable" to describe his progress, we, of course, use GOD'S MIRACLE!

At the 1:30PM visitation today, I noticed that the TV in his room was on the Discovery Channel. I told the nurse that was Carter's favorite channel. She said, "I know, Carter told me". They have brought a dry erase board and an alphabet chart into his room and Carter had spelled out on the alphabet chart he wanted to watch the Discovery Channel. ABC could have been a fluke guess, but
Discovery Channel implies he is really thinking. Tonight he kept trying his best to speak to me, attempted to write on the dry erase board and finally spelled out, "My tubes, untie my hands" on the alphabet chart. His hands are restrained to prevent him from doing just that. His eyes are clear and he recognizes people when they come into the room. Allen Gray, the father of Keith Gray, one of his Sigma Chi brothers, visited tonight and Carter new exactly who he was. He also was able to tell the nurse where he was in school.

His pneumonia continues to linger, but is not getting any worse. He has a fever that continues to spike, but is controllable with Tylenol. His lungs remain weak, but are slowly strengthening. They are definitely trying to work him off of the ventilator and have a goal of getting him there sometime this week. His pancreatitis is getting better, his surgical wounds are healing nicely and his cognitive function app ears very, very good. He is also attempting to sit himself up and moving all of his extremities.
Our prayer requests are:

* That his pneumonia will clear up and he will not have to cough. This brings him a lot of discomfort and pain.
* That his lungs will continue to heal and he can have the ET and feeding tube removed within the next day or two.
* That he will be able to rest comfortable and peacefully through the night and feel the Lord's presence with him. That he will have no fear.
* For safe travel for Connie as she comes back to Huntsville from Tuscaloosa tomorrow afternoon.

Today our gratitude is tangible and evident in Carter's face and eyes. God has truly done a miracle in sparing his life and bringing him back to us whole. While Carter still has a long road ahead of him, in terms of being completely healed, it appears he will be able to get there. We are joyous and thankful with the thoughts that he could be able to be back at BSC by January. The power of intercessory prayer continues to be the theme that we see at work. Hebrews 7:25 articulates this perfectly; "Consequently, He is able to save to the
uttermost those who draw near to God through Christ, since He always lives to make intercession for them". We have clearly seen that Christ is alive over the past ten days.

Connie and I are praying that the Lord will bless all of you who have, and continue, to pray for Carter. You have touched our hearts and brought us great comfort through these challenging, but rewarding days.

Warmest Regards,

Bob Crutchfield
