Program
PE Betsy introduced our very own, Ed Duffy. Ed has served as Prosecutor in several area municipalities/townships and gave the membership the do's and don't when you are are stopped for violating traffic laws or have to appear in municipal court.:
- Stopped for Speeding - It is a good idea to "hit the brakes" when you find yourself flying by a partrol car. It is better to acknowledge that you have been speeding.
- Make sure you have all three (3) of your documents - License, registration, ID card
- Throw out the old ID card (So you can only hand the officer the current card - may save a visit to court)
- Politeness - Do NOT be rude and obnoxious. Remain polite and cooperative.
- Do not use excuses for speeding, they have heard them all! Answer questions, admit guilt, don't low-ball your speed - they know how fast you were going!)
- Tell where you were or are going if asked - be honest.
If you do all of the above, the officer may reduce the violation and issue a non-moving ticket. If you receive a "unclear plates" or "no seatbelt worn" or "Obstruction of View" ticket - DO NOT plead "Not guilty". They are giving you a break - accept it and be happy.
When entering the court, DO NOT run up to the Prosecutor and ask how long you are going to be, sit down, and wait your turn.
Attorney represented cases are heard first.
You can only receive (2) non-point tickets in a 5-yr. period. There is a $250 surchage after that.
Leaving the scene of an accident is a very serious offense which may involve DWI charges. There have been an increase in stop sign violations.
If you are stopped for speeding over 90 mph, in some municipalities there may be a 1 day jail sentence.
So SLOOOOW DOWN! Hopefully we Rotarians will not need to use this information!
