Today’s Program
The Katrina team who traveled to Waveland, Mississippi, last April gave a presentation on their experiences. Rotarians taking part in the mission to aid flood victims were Bonnie Laube, Gail Marino, Rose Pacitto, Cornell Brunson and Linda Foster. Non-Rotarians who joined the group were Patty Strang, John Barbour and Harold Kelly.
Bonnie explained their main task was to provide the basics to those still suffering the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina ––food, water, clothing and shelter. “Camp Katrina,” a faith-based organization, was headquarters for the operation. Bonnie said the volunteers are assigned specific jobs such as painting, cleaning and cooking. Rose, she said, was appointed leader of the painting crew, a source of pride for her fellow team members. “Physical help is needed much more than money,” Bonnie said. “There were many people who can’t help themselves, such as the elderly or disabled. They were all so grateful.” It was also emphasized that even a year later, the devastation from the hurricane still remains and still requires help from outside sources.
John Barbour commented, “The simple act of human kindness was more important than monetary donations.” Cornell added, “Your life will not be the same when you come back,” urging members to join the next trip, scheduled for Nov. 5 through 12. The Vineland group will be limited to 30 or 35 participants, Bonnie said. The deadline for signing up is Sept. 15.
A slide show depicting scenes of the devastation and the Vineland crew at work was shown, prepared by photographer Jay Parks.
