Flag Salute & Prayer

Loren led our singing, Marty let us in the Pledge and Four-Way-Test. Today’s singers were Loren, Ed, Ted, Ed Duffy, Carl, Jerry and Gus. Cornell gave the blessing.

Guests

Richard Volpe visited us today from the Lansdown, PA Rotary club.

Special Announcement

April 3rd - Duck Bowlathon - Meeting held at Loyle Lanes - We will not be meeting at the Ramada Inn

Announcements

P. Mike read a thank you we received this week from the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization thanking us. We recently hosted “littles” to a Phantoms ice hockey game. Everyone had a great time.

Paige announced the 27th Annual Dinner and Fashion Show on Wednesday, 4/18 at Merighi’s Savoy Inn. The show is sponsored by the Vineland Regional Dance Company. Fashions will feature Paige, her 1-year old son and maybe even P. Mike! Tickets are $40. See Paige for tickets.

Rotary Night at the 76ers will be sponsored by our district on Tuesday, April 10th. Tickets are only $44 per person and include a $30 replica jersey with seating on the 2nd level. Proceeds from the event will total $20.50 per ticket, and will support the building of a school in Brazil. For tickets call Jack Dilks at 856-456-8904.

Norm Neill said Bob Middleton suffered a head injury while skiing out west recently. He had a helmet on, and it saved his life. He had to be brought to the medical center by helicopter. Although the injury was very severe, he is expected to recover and be back in Vineland by the end of the week.

Duckmaster

Betsy said we will be selling ducks at the Vineland Flea Market this Saturday starting at 8:30 AM. Come out even if you have not signed up, whenever you can make it. She said we will be at the Newfield Bank on Main Road on the 31st. We will have a duck labeling party on April 11th. And the race, it is coming quickly – April 14th! Sell your ducks! Quack! Bill Duckley, er…Dudley… gave a pitch for getting sponsors for the Duckrace. He suggested as businesspeople, we should hit our suppliers for sponsorships. Have them support us instead of giving us chocolates, etc. We need sponsors. So far we have sold 864 ducks.

Lou Tramontana announced the District Conference in Hershey on June 8,9 and 10. Twelve members have signed up so far. He gave us the agenda for the weekend and said hospitality suites, meals, registration, the House of Friendship and the Governor’s Ball will be covered by one low price. Bonnie will be giving a talk on the Katrina Trip and Tim will be talking about fish farming. See Lou to sign up.

Joe Delgado asked for helpers for the Spirit and Truth Ministries food kitchen on April 7th and 8th. He also announced a Challenger League Committee meeting at the Clubhouse building at the park next week. See Joe for more information.

Pat gave a joke about how things “could have been worse”.

Finemaster

Betsy felt Pat’s joke couldn’t have been much worse (and from the groans, the club agreed) so Pat was the first to be fined. Mike Benson was fined for not winning the NJ State Lottery. George was fined for sitting inside his warm car while his wife and kids braved the weather at a soccer game. Remember the old men on the Muppet’s show? We found them at one of our tables today. Fines for all!

Today’s Program

Bill Dudley introduced Gene Marx a CPA who is a penny pincher.
Gene owns a 10 employee firm and has been well published regarding his frugal views. He has published books and articles and sells business software to help small businesses save money to become more profitable.

He gave a list of websites for the penny pincher:
Craigslist.com – free employment ads/equipment and stuff (no recourse)/tickets Froogle (from Google) – lists best prices for items on the internet Del.ici.ous – site ranks other sites by popularity as users’ “favorites” Alexa.com – can evaluate your competitor’s website.

Other ideas that work include buying used or broken cellphones on ebay and sending them out to be fixed, using text messaging to reduce the time and cost of long phone calls and using consultants to audit your telephone bills.

Even though he is a Microsoft Partner, he advised not to buy Windows Vista right now. The patches will probably not be out for 4 or 5 months and most computers will have problems running the software because of memory and driver differences. You can buy machines now that run Windows 2000 and XP. They will be priced much lower than those newer ones running Vista.
